Top 10 Beatles Songs

My Ten Faves by the Fab Four

Jillian McCoy
The Beatles were arguably the greatest rock band of all time. John, Paul, George, and Ringo - four regular guys from across the pond who would eventually become "bigger than Jesus". Even if you're not interested in rock music, you'd have to be living under a rock to not hear of this quartet at some point over the last 50 years. They've influenced everyone from Michael Jackson to Marilyn Manson, and will probably continue to be a source of musical inspiration for generations to come.

I was raised listening to The Beatles, my mom having been just a young girl when Beatlemania swept the world. My mother and I have very different tastes in Beatles songs, however - she's mostly into stuff like Magical Mystery Tour while I'm primarily a fan of later albums like Abbey Road. Thanks to their expansive collection of songs, just about every Beatles fan has a different set of favorites. Here's mine.

#10 "Twist and Shout"

This song deserves an entry for the parade scene in Ferris Bueller's Day Off alone. This song symbolizes the height of Beatlemania for me - every time I listen to it, I can practically hear the young girls screaming in the background.

#9 "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!"

A slightly bizarre trip to the circus. Not their most critically serious song, but fun, catchy and memorable. This is the favorite Beatles song of a friend of mine and reminds me of him each time I hear it.

#8 "Glass Onion"

This song revisits some other Beatles songs: "The Walrus was Paul". I love the way the instruments are isolated on this song - the bass and drums sound particularly crisp. Definitely a song for headphones, a great example of The Beatles' trademark attention to production detail.

#7 "Julia"

"Half of what I say is meaningless...." Soft and simple, just John Lennon and finger-picking guitar. It sounds to me like he's trying to play quietly to avoid waking people up.

#6 "Get Back"

I love the bluesy guitar on this song. I think it's got simple enough notes to lend itself very well to being covered, but I have yet to hear any other bands tackle "Get Back".

#5 "Octopus' Garden"

A fun trip underwater. This song has the distinction of being one of the few written by Ringo Starr - most of the Beatles catalog was written by Paul McCartney and/or John Lennon.

#4 "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"

This up-tempo song always reminds me of "Our House" by Madness. I really love the piano and the scattered background noises throughout the song. Desmond & Molly Jones sound like a pretty happy couple to me.

#3 "When I'm 64"

Call me romantic, but I love the idea of growing old with someone. Relying on each other as years go by and still enjoying their company, what could be better? This song illustrates that idea perfectly.

#2 "You Never Give Me Your Money"

This song was featured on side 2 of the critically acclaimed Abbey Road album. The opening piano starts out somber, then the other instruments come in to add some life to the song. Another great song for headphones - as a bass player, I tend to always listen for the bass notes, which are particularly rich in this song.

#1 "In My Life"

Truly a beautiful song. This is among the most meaningful love songs of all time, as far as I'm concerned. Looking back on your past and realizing how much you love the person you're with by comparison - how they blow away anything you thought you felt before. So sweet.

Nice, unique, often overlooked choices. The only one that would have made it into my top ten is "In my Life" though.

I'ts impossible to limit it to ten, they did so many great songs, but here's some of my favorites: Besides In My Life, which I agree is at or near the top, I'd include Eleanor Rigby, For No One, Here Comes the Sun, I've Just Seen A Face, Let It Be, The Long and Winding Road, And I Love Her, I Feel Fine, and I Will. And it was really something to grow up while they were producing this musio, all the innovations they did.
