From June Cleaver to the Women of Wisteria Lane, TV Moms Have Come a Long Way

Jackie Kass
TV Moms have entertained us for over 50 years. From June Cleaver to the women of Wisteria Lane, TV Moms have come a long way. In fact, the role of the TV Mom evolved over the decades, reflecting women's ever-changing role in the family, the workplace and in society as a whole.

In the 1950's, shows like "Leave It to Beaver" and "Father Knows Best" portrayed Mom in heels and pearls, while caring for the home, children and her husband. The 1960's ushered in a time of rebellion and change. On shows like "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and "The Lucy Show" TV Moms did more than just bake, and even began to have career aspirations. Women's rights came to the forefront in the1970's, along with high divorce rates. We saw a lot of outspoken, single TV Moms on shows like "One Day at a Time", "Alice" and "Maude." The 1980's was a decade of corporate ladder climbing and over-achievers. On shows like "The Cosby Show" and "Family Ties" TV Moms reflected that desire to have it all. TV Moms in the 1990's ran the gamut and reflected the wide variety of choices available to women. Brett Butler in "Grace Under Fire" was divorced and struggling to make ends meet. Patricia Richardson in "Home Improvement" left the workforce to become a housewife, but later returned to school. TV Moms of the new millennium portray a combination of decades past, but are more neurotic, allowing for a more three-dimensional and realistic portrayal of motherhood. The housewives on Wisteria Lane are finding a way to raise children, while dealing with their own personal deamons.
