Case 39 - This is one of the most bizarre-sounding upcoming movies of January 2010, as it features everyone's favorite romantic comedy and Oscar-worthy movie star Rene Zellweger in a horror movie role. Zellweger stars as a social worker who takes in a troubled 10-year-old girl after her own parents try to kill her, with results that will surely be creepy. Sure the plot sounds extremely similar to 'Orphan' and other movies about murderous children, but just maybe this one will go an unexpected direction (I'm guessing it must for Rene to take on this role; either that, or she's just getting that desperate for movie roles). It could be one of the best or worst upcoming horror movies of 2010 when it hits theaters on January 1, 2010.
Daybreakers - If you didn't get enough vampire movies in 2009, there are a few more upcoming vampire movies of 2010 that don't feature sparkly and sexy vampires, but the good ol' fashioned evil kind. This is another of the upcoming horror movies of January 2010 that could be very scary or extremely laughable, and one of the many upcoming post-apocalyptic movies of 2010. This one focuses on a world where a plague has transformed most of the inhabitants of the world into vampires, and with humans nearing extinction, the vampires are forced to farm them or find a blood substitute before it's too late. At least it's one of the more original upcoming movies of 2010, and an interesting new take on a tale involving vampires. One of the best upcoming movies about bloodsuckers will hit theaters on January 8, 2010.
Leap Year - And you can't start off the new year without a few great romantic comedies! This looks like one of your best bets when it comes to the upcoming romantic comedies of 2010, as it stars extremely likable Amy Adams. She plays a gal that's so desperate to get married, she decides to follow her boyfriend to Dublin to partake in an Irish tradition that allows women to propose to men on February 29th. But of course things don't go as planned, and she finds herself enlisting the help of a handsome stranger to get her back home. Like most romantic comedies, it's pretty predictable, but Amy Adams in the lead makes this one of the best (but cheesiest) upcoming movies of January 2010 for taking your favorite lass to go see. See love go green the Irish way in theaters on January 8, 2010.
Wonderful World - This looks like it could be one of the best little upcoming movies of January 2010, so don't miss it if it comes to theaters near you (as far as I can tell, it's looking like this will only be in limited release). Matthew Broderick stars as a character more like Cameron Frye and less like his best bud and everyone's favorite high school hero, Ferris Bueller, in this movie about being a pessimist about everything. It has one of the more unique storylines of all of the upcoming movies of 2010, focusing on a man fighting "The Man" after he feels that a municipal employee has robbed him of his only comfort in life, playing chess with his roommate. But suing the city for depraved indifference turns his half-empty life upside down. This is one of the upcoming movies of January 2009 I'd like to see most, but I'm rather pessimistic about seeing it in theaters on January 8, 2010.
Youth in Revolt - And here's one of the best upcoming funny movies of January 2010 aimed at the college crowd. It looks like a male form of 'Juno', featuring everyone's favorite funny guy, Michael Cera, as a trailer park resident that meets the girl of his dreams and will do everything within his power to lose his virginity to her. Sure the plot isn't surprising, but with good writing and character development, this could definitely be one of the best funny upcoming movies of January 2010 (which, sadly, isn't saying much). Check out one of the few best upcoming movies of January 2010 that could at least make you smile once or twice on January 8, 2010.
Let Me In - Get ready for the slew of 2010 movie remakes, starting with this one. While I'm extremely skeptical of a remake of the extremely good 'Let the Right One In', this could be one of the best upcoming movies of January 2010 that really surprises me. I won't reveal too much about the plot, as I was already extremely annoyed by hearing about the plot of 'Let the Right One In' before seeing it, so I'll just say it's one of the most unique tales of childhood friendship you'll ever see. Check out what could be one of the best upcoming movies of January 2010 when it hits theaters on January 15, 2010.
Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil - This is one of the upcoming movies that I'm not extremely thrilled about, but updated versions of fairytales can be a lot of fun. But the real reason this movie is on this list is because there just aren't any good upcoming animated movies for January 2010, and when it comes to upcoming family movies, this is definitely your best bet. (It's this or 'Tooth Fairy', starring The Rock). Check out one of the only upcoming January 2010 family-friendly movies in theaters on January 15, 2010, and be sure to start renting plenty of kids' movies on Netflix to keep everyone entertained until next month.
When in Rome - Here's another of the upcoming movies of January 2010 that falls into the romantic comedy category. This movie starts out in the most romantic place possible: Rome, and stars an actress not known for romantic comedies but apparently trying to get there, Kristen Bell (she's the real reason I put this movie on this list of the best upcoming movies of 2010; sorry, but there just wasn't much to choose from). When her character plucks a handful of coins from a silly little fountain of love, she is pursued by a handful of colorful and odd suitors. However, when a guy that comes along that she doesn't mind chasing her around, how will she know if his love is the real thing, or a little of Venus' magic? It's not one of the upcoming movies of January 2010 that I most look forward to, but it could have it's bright spots. At least it won't be too hard to get your boyfriend to accompany you to one of the best upcoming movies of January 2010 that falls under the romantic comedy category, thanks to the magic spell of Kristen Bell. Catch it in theaters on January 29, 2010.
The Book of Eli - Here's one of the many post-apocalyptic upcoming movies of January 2010. It stars Denzel Washington as a man in possession of book that may hold the secret to saving humanity, but he has to fight his way across a post-apocalyptic America to protect it. And if the move sounds boring to you, Mila Kunis and Jennifer Beals star as eye candy to give you a break from the movie's bleak landscape. Be prepared to be either really entertained and really bored when what is probably one of the most-anticipated upcoming movies of January 2010 hits theaters on January 15, 2010.
Legion - And I guess we'll just have to expect a slew of apocalyptic movies every year until 2013 rolls around (or until the world ends in 2012). This one takes a more biblical approach to the end times, with a young waitress from an isolated truck stop diner becoming pregnant with the messiah, an army of angels out to eliminate humanity, and one archangel siding with mankind. It may not be one of the best upcoming movies of January 2010, but it should be full of plenty of action and excitingly destructive visuals. Check out yet another of the upcoming movies of January 2010 where mankind has to fight for survival in theaters on January 22, 2010.
So from a slew of post-apocalyptic movies to a few fun romantic comedies and more, hopefully these best upcoming movies of January 2010 will help your escape and relax after the hectic holiday season.
