Top 10 Comedy Movies of the Decade for the 2000s

Jolynne M Hudnell
The 2000s decade had some good comedy movies, though most were combined with other movie genres. Here is this writer's selection of the top 10 comedy movies of the decade for the 2000s that she actually was able to see.

Note: Movies are listed in order of year released. Date and actor information obtained from The Internet Movie Database (IMDb)1.

Top Comedy Movie of the Decade for the 2000s: The Whole Nine Yards (2000)
Nicholas "Oz" Oseransky (Matthew Perry) is just a dentist. He and his wife (Rosanna Arquette) hate each other, but she would prefer him dead. Oz discovers that new neighbor Jimmy "The Tulip" Tudeski (Bruce Willis) is a hit man, but one who is wanted by the Mob. Lots of double-crossing and laughs to go around.

Top Comedy Movie of the Decade for the 2000s: Miss Congeniality (2000)
Total tomboy and loner FBI agent, Gracie Hart (Sandra Bullock), must go undercover as a contestant at the Miss United States Beauty Pageant. Laughs ensue as a top handler, Victor Melling (Michael Caine), tries to groom Hart into a graceful lady.

Top Comedy Movie of the Decade for the 2000s: The Mummy Returns (2001)
Although this movie is equally full of action, there are too many funny parts to discount this as a comedy. Rick O'Connell (Brendon Fraser) and new wife Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) are unwittingly dragged into another save-the-world scenario.

Top Comedy Movie of the Decade for the 2000s: Cats and Dogs (2001)
Dogs are the good guys, trying to save humanity from takeover by evil cats led by fluffy white cat, Mr. Tinkles. Don't let the name fool you, Mr. Tinkles has a sinister plot he is sure will work to rule over mankind. Also with Jeff Goldblum.

Top Comedy Movie of the Decade for the 2000s: Zoolander (2001)
Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) is a completely clueless male model. After being male model of the year for 3 years, he is de-throned by Hansel (Owen Wilson). Zoolander's world collapses from the fall, and he is sucked into a conspiracy by the King of haute couture, Mugatu (Will Ferrell). This movie is more of what this writer labels a "stupid funny", but creates laughter nonetheless.

Top Comedy Movie of the Decade for the 2000s: Anger Management (2003)
Dave Buznik (Adam Sandler) has such an anger problem, that a judge wants to lock him up. But famed anger counselor, Dr. Buddy Rydell (Jack Nicholson), convinces the judge that he can help. Can Buznik learn to control his anger and keep his girlfriend, Linda (Marisa Tomei)? Or is Dr. Rydell pretending to help with his methods of madness to steal Linda away from Buznik? Jack Nicholson as a mental health counselor? That's funny in and of itself.

Top Comedy Movie of the Decade for the 2000s: The Stepford Wives (2004)
After suffering a nervous breakdown, highly successful Joanna Eberhart (Nicole Kidman) and her husband, Walter Kresby (Matthew Broderick), move to a perfect upper-class little community. Most of the women are the perfect little housewives and completely happy with it. Eberhart befriends Bobbie Markowitz (Bette Midler) who is not so idyllic. Then something happens, and Markowitz is transformed overnight from brash and independent to one of the perfect little housewives. Is the local men's club responsible? As Eberhart gets closer the the truth, will she suffer the same fate?

Top Comedy Movie of the Decade for the 2000s: Guess Who (2005)
Simon Green (Ashton Kutcher) is going to meet his girlfriend Theresa Jones' (Zoe Saldana) parents. But Jones' father, Percy Jones (Bernie Mac), is shocked that his daughter's boyfriend is...white. Very enjoyable comedy as the two try to break through their prejudices and the ensuing gender divides.

Top Comedy Movie of the Decade for the 2000s: Talladega Nights (2006)
Ricky Bobby (Will Ferrell) is NASCAR's hottest racer. Well, until French driver Jean Girard (Sacha Baron Cohen) enters the race. Although this movie is mainly the "stupid funny" type, there is a lot of real humor here.

Top Comedy Movie of the Decade for the 2000s: Blades of Glory (2007)
When 2 male figure skaters (Will Ferrell and Jon Heder) get banned from skating for fighting at the awards presentation, they try to live everyday lives. But a loophole in the regulations will allow them one chance to regain their former glory - to compete in the partners competition. With no female partners available, they choose the only option left, to skate together as partners. This writer really laughed during this movie.

Honorable Mention Comedy Movie of the Decade for the 2000s: Dogma (1999)
This movie could not be included in the 2000s decade choices as it was released at the very end of 1999, but it is worth including in this list. Fun is poked at organized religion, so do not watch if it would offensive. Bartleby (Ben Affleck) and Loki (Matt Damon) are two fallen angels that are trying to get back into Heaven, but the loophole they find will destroy humanity. Can disenchanted Bethany (Linda Fiorentino) regain enough faith to save the world? This movie has a star-studded cast (did this writer already mention Matt Damon?) that is definitely worth the time of watching. You may just find yourself laughing.

I haven't seen too many of these, but definitely enjoyed Anger Management. The combination of Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler was funny indeed.

Ahhh! You left out the funniest of all time (at least for me) "Birdcage". Or, maybe it didn't fit the category, I just don't know.

Thanks Jolynne, I don't "get out much" so we can know what to watch on DVD (if available yet) since we spend some down time just hanging out as a family and we prefer commendy. If we want to watch dramas, we can always turn to CNN. Thanks. Great review. : - )
