"I Love," Tom T Hall, 1973. How could anybody NOT like this song, c'mon, little baby ducks and old pickup trucks? Add in those puppies and you've already hooked every sentimental fan who is fit to turn on the radio. And guess what? The song has a whole lot of repetitions of those three little words that make valentines day a special day for lovers (no, not "go hang yourself"), "I love you." Comes right out with it, just like it's as normal as loving slow moving trains, or Sunday school in May. Come to think of it, listing to Tom sing about it, it is. And if you watch the linked video, don't even try to tell tell me you didn't smile at the "youtube" joke.
"Remember When," Alan Jackson, 2004. Fair warning: anybody with any history at all is going to cry when they listen this. It's so beautifully heartbreaking, it doesn't get any better. I'm sorry, but if you don't like this song, you don't like country music. An honest, beautiful song that seems like more than a song, it seems like life put to music, with all of the love and heartaches, the good times and the bad. Thanks Alan.
"Strawberry Wine," Deana Carter, 1996. A bittersweet coming of age, first love kind of song. Unless you've never had a first love, this will touch you. Looking back on that magical summer with that sweet longing, knowing there will never be another. We only get one first love, but it's right here, recorded forever, and what better time to haul it out and cue it up than Valentines Day?
"Where've You Been", Kathy Mattea, 1989. Love lasts a lifetime, sometimes even longer, as in this heartbreaking song. A tribute to a lifetime of love. Love doesn't have to be about cheating and leaving and hurting, in fact it SHOULDN"T be about those things. . Sometimes, like in this song, love is truly about a lifetime of commitment, companionship, and not knowing what you'd do without that special better half. I've never heard it said that Valentines Day is wasted on the young, but this song sure makes me wonder.
"When I Said I Do", Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black, 1999. I don't think God actually invented Valentines Day, but if He had, I think this song would have been what He had in mind. Singing the best Valentines Day songs takes two, for obvious reasons. And when the two are in love, married for more than a minute, and raising children together, well, what a bonus. It isn't even close, this is obviously the best Valentines Day song ever. Valentine's Day Music is not about cheating on your wife and begging her let you back, it's not about losing your love, or letting them go. Valentines Day is about true love that remains strong, like Grandpa and Grandma who've been married 60 years. Celebrate your Strong commitment to your one true love.
"From This Moment On," Shania Twain and Bryan White, 1997. These two sound good together, no wonder this is such A popular choice for valentines Day, weddings, anniversaries, it's a consummate love song, they have great chemistry, and there really isn't much more that needs to be to said about it .
"Perhaps Love," John Denver, 1981. I've often said that I don't even consider John Denver a Country musician, but this is such an outstanding song on the subject of love, and so perfect for Valentines Day, I just had to include it. Don't get me wrong, I've got all of John's albums and I can play most of his tunes on the guitar, I just don't sit down with him when I'm in a country state of mind, if you know what I mean. Perhaps you'll like this one too, I do.
"Shut Up And Kiss Me." Mary Chapin Carpenter, 1994. A specialty song just in case you've got one of those shy guys who is never gonna kiss you without a little help. Seriously, there are still some out there, and while it's better than having to fight off the brutes every night, come on guys, it's VALENTINES DAY, for Cupid's sake.
"Valentine," Martina McBride, 1997. Now how could you leave a song named "valentine" and sung by Martina off a list of country Valentines Day songs? You couldn't, and of course I didn't. It doesn't hurt a thing if the song is an instant classic country Valentine's Day standard, and this one is. A more than serviceable tune and melody, and Martina's outstanding vocals, this will round out anyone's list of favorite valentine songs. It's comfortable, like and old friend.
