Top 10 Crocheted Fashions of 2006

1. Wrist warmers

Call them "wristables," fingerless gloves, or mitts, but this fashion accessory has been a real hit this year, especially in the fall and winter months. Make them out of worsted, or light worsted, but they are a cinch to complete in just a few hours. Their popularity stems from the ease of their creation, and their ability to be done by beginners and professionals alike. Dress them up with ribbons, beads, or lace, and you have a great accessory in no time.

2. Scarves

Although you generally think of scarves as only a fall and winter necessity, scarves have been fashioned with lattice weave for a breezy summer crocheted fashion as well. The latest winter scarf trends center around soft, bulky weight yarns and floral stitches. Wear them bundled up or even as a sash at your waist, but scarves of all lengths and widths are high on this list of the top 10 crocheted fashions of 2006.

3. Belts

We aren't talking about the belts that look 'homemade,' but hip-hugging creations that are bursting with cross-stitches, and other beautiful 3-D designs. These are easy to match outfits with the right yarn choices and never go out of style.

4. Corsets

And in case you hadn't noticed, corsets are in this year as the latest 'outerwear' accessory to a button-down shirt, dress, or lacy peasant shirt. Not only can you find hundreds of patterns for corset-looking belts, but you can actually make a functional corset (e.g. check out stitchdiva online). The corset is made with Tunisan style crochet stitches and works up quickly with suede yarn. Crochet around boning and get the latest fashion that will actually slim your waist. Pretty snazzy, no?

5. Vertical stitched jackets

One of the newest ways to crochet is vertically, instead of horizontally. Generally we crochet out the width of garments and stitch back and forth until the desired lengths have been reached. But with vertical stitched clothing, you stitch the length and then work up the width. Neat, eh? Vertical stitched jackets are just one of the top 10 crochet fashions that have given Crocheters a new perspective on their trade for 2006.

6. Hats

Hats are always a fun way to top an outfit, and they can be fashioned out of left over yarn from other projects to match perfectly. From the fedora to the bucket hat and back to the 1920s flapper style, crocheted hats are quick to make and look splendid on any head.

7. Ponchos

Ponchos are still holding on strong. Look for 2006 designs of delicate floral stitches, shells, and ribbon yarn creations. Ponchos are the perfect beginners project and adult patterns can easily be altered to fit kids.

8. Boleros & Shrugs

As these are only half a sweater, they can be made in only half the time. Use fuzzy yarns for a winter look, or light worsted for a lightweight summer shrug; but any way you hook it, you'll love the results.

9. Pineapple stitch jackets

The pineapple stitch makes a great trim to bell-sleeved jackets. That's why pineapple stitch jackets have had great success in the crocheted fashion world this year. With open designs, luxurious sleeves, and fascinating fasteners, these jackets are popular among the younger Crocheters.

10. Skirts

It's hard to find good skirt patterns to crochet, but this year's pattern designers have given us new hope. The pineapple stitch skirt in mid-calf length complements nearly every body-type and the long draping hairpin skirts are beautiful. Top these designs off with a few flared creations, and no crocheter can resist.
