Top 10 Dramatic Movies for Mother's Day

Best Movies to Watch with Your Mom

JR
Mother's Day is a perfect opportunity to spend some extra time with your mother. And what best way to do so than to watch movies with her. Here's a list of 10 best dramatic movies that are perfect for that occasion.

1. "Terms of Endearment"

This is an amazing movie starring Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger as mother and daughter. Directed by James L. Brooks, the movie is a story of their lives, through affairs, weddings and heart breaks. In the end, however, the relationship between mother and daughter turns out to be the strongest and the most important one. And while there are truly sad moments in the movie (as it's a drama), it's a perfect match for your Mother's Day movie night.

2. "Erin Brockovich"

Oscar winner Julia Roberts plays Erin Brockovich, an unemployed mother of three, who is struggling to provide for her children. In doing so, she ends up at a lawyers office, trying to help families, who fell victims to the major company. While completely different from the previous drama, this movie offers not only a great portrayal of a strong woman, it's counters the heavy plot with a lighthearted dialogue.

3. "My Sister's Keeper"

While many people might not consider this movie a good match for the Mother's Day event, I strongly recommend it. It's a story of a young girl who's been a donor for her older sister ever since she was born. It shows her quest to emancipate herself from her parents in order to be able to stop all the medical procedures. The inner struggle of the girl's mother, who's trying to do good by both of her daughters is one of the most moving journeys in contemporary cinema. Additionally both Abigail Breslin (the main character) and Cameron Diaz (who plays the mother, and does so brilliantly) show an amazing acting skills through the entire movie.

4. "Step mom"

Yet another movie starring Julia Roberts. This time she's accompanied by Susan Sarandon and Ed Harris. "Stepmom" is a story of a divorcee Jackie Harrison (Sarandon) who has to deal with her ex-husband new girlfriend (Roberts). At first she's almost hostile towards the new woman, but when she learns of her terminal illness she decides to do everything to ensure her children will have the best stepmother possible. By putting her children first, Jackie goes from the typical scorned woman to a wonderful three dimensional character.

5. "Sleepless in Seattle"

This drama might not be your typical choice for Mother's Day, but it's moving love story starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks will be perfect for all generations. The connection that can be created despite the distance, with help of a little boy who knows without a doubt that his father needs somebody in his life, can bring you both smile and tears.

6. "The Incredibles"

This cartoon is definitely not only meant for children. It might be kept light and funny, but the story of a family, who happens to have superpowers, is worth the attention. Especially the developing relationship between mother and daughter (Helen and Violet).

7. "Parenthood"

Starring Steve Martin, Mary Steenburgen, Dianne Wiest and Keanu Reeves, "Parenthood" tells a story of parents, and their sometimes too high expectations towards their children. It shows how sensitive the relationship can be and what happens when it's unhealthy.

8. "Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot "

This is not much of a drama, but this movie, starring Sylvester Stallone as a police officer and Estelle Getty as his mother, shows a different side of a relationship between a mother and a grown up child. And how, even after a rocky start, they can find some common ground.

9. "Freaky Friday"

Both versions, one starring Jodie Foster from 1977 and the one starring Lindsey Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis from 2003 are a must see for Mother's Day. "Freaky Friday" is a story about mother and daughter and their constant fights and arguments, who magically swap bodies for a day. This gives them both a wonderful perspective and a new look into the other's life.

10. "The Parent Trap"

Closing the list is "The Parent Trap" with Lindsey Lohan (playing both twins) and Dennis Quaid. It's a story of two twins, separated when they parents divorced, meeting again at a summer camp. When the girls decide to reunite their family, hilarity ensues.
