"Deadliest Catch," the Discovery Channel docu-series about crab fishermen on the Bering Sea, is becoming increasingly popular. Now starting its fifth season, the show continues to explore the trials and tribulations of working in one of the world's deadliest environments.
Whether you are a regular viewer of "Deadliest Catch" or are just discovering the program, the following 10 episodes represent the best of the series so far. They are ordered according to their original broadcast dates rather than importance.
- "Greenhorns" (Season One, Episode One) - In the first episode of "Deadliest Catch," we find 250 boats gathered in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. This is the beginning of 2005 Alaskan king crab season and the first time we meet the many faces of the show.
-
- "Long Sleepless Nights" (Season One, Episode Two) - Here, we see for the first time how hard it is for greenhorns to adjust to life at sea.
-
- "Dead of Winter" (Season One, Episode Five) - The Coast Guard responds to an emergency signal, only to find but one survivor from the capsized fishing vessel Big Valley.
-
- "Batten Down the Hatches" (Season Two, Episode Two) - A pair of storm systems affect many of the boats, causing major problems. It is so severe that the crew of The Northwestern must hide behind an island to sit out a storm.
-
- "Friends and Rivals" (Season Two, Episode Five) - Storms continue to be a problem, even knocking The Aleutian Ballad onto its side. Meanwhile, some of the other crews play some pranks on each other.
-
- "Race Against the Ice" (Season Two, Episode 11) - The Northwestern's crew struggle with exhaustion and long hours. Meanwhile, an injury aboard the Cornelia Marie leaves the boat shorthanded.
-
- "A Tragic Beginning" (Season Three, Episode One) - The season premiere begins with high drama as more lives are claimed. The capsized Ocean Challenger leaves only one survivor.
-
- "Pain and Paybacks" (Season Three, Episode Three) - More hijinks ensue on the Bering Sea as Captain Blake Painter is caught betraying Captain Phil's trust. The payback is a full crab pot that's been welded shut.
-
- "Get 'Em Back Safe!" (Season Four, Episode One) - Before the season even begins, The Wizard has a hole torn in the hull, which must be patched. Meanwhile, the Time Bandit loads an old pickup truck onto the boat for a practical joke.
-
- "Fresh Blood" (Season Four, 13) - Captain Phil checks himself into the emergency room after waking up in pain and coughing up blood. It is discovered that he nearly died from a blood clot, which traveled through his heart and into his lung.
