Top 10 Fantasy Football Busts

Shane Dayton
It happens every year. You get a high draft pick, and your mouth is drooling at the potential big name players you have to lead your fantasy football team to glory after you came all so close the year before. But then it happens. That preseason team that looked amazing turns out to be a terrible failure in every sense of the word.

This article is on the ten biggest fantasy football busts of 2008. Busts are determined by projected value versus actual value, potential left on the field, and the sheer amount of damage their crappy season had on a fantasy team that looked good in preseason. Oh, and season ending injuries, or major injuries taking most of the season, don't count. Yeah, all you Tom Brady drafters have a right to be pissed, but a bust is a guy who doesn't produce, so injuries suck, but that's bad luck.

#10: DEF Chicago Bears. Be honest. How many of you drafted a defense three of four rounds too early to get those few points a week edge? Where are the return yards? Where are the touchdowns? When was the last time a sack in Chicago was more than a bag to carry potatoes in? Biggest bust of all the defenses by far.

#9: TE Kevin Boss. He has some TDs so his over all point total isn't bad, but Boss is not the consistent weapon everyone was expecting, and it can be infuriating to get 12 points one week and 1 point the next.

#8: WR Chris Chambers. Remember the last several years in a row where everyone said if he only had a good quarterback he might be one of the best WRs in the NFL (I think Bill Simmons made this argument on ESPN a few times)? That argument is gone. Even as an early middle round pick, unless you were in a 12 team position heavy flex league, this pick had to have pissed you off.

#7: WR Marvin Harrison. Nagging injuries have plagued him, and he just doesn't have the crispness he once did. But many people were smart enough to see the decline that all the preseason signs pointed to. Those who didn't have paid for it.

#6: RB Reggie Bush. This pick comes with a caveat. If you are in a point per reception league, Bush has been fantastic and isn't a bust at all. If you're not in a point per reception league, then he has been solid, but not first three rounds worthy. Projected as the #6 player in pre-season by Yahoo fantasy football, he is currently ranked 51st.

#5: QB Derrick Anderson. Ouch. And ouch. One guy in my league drafted him with the number three overall pick. That was his season. Or at least it would have been if anyone else had been smart enough to draft Matt Forte or Michael Turner before the late rounds.

#4: RB Ryan Grant. A "good" week is 85 yards and 0 TD. Really? Anyone who thought they had a starter with this pick has been badly disappointed. There's always next year...just maybe not for Grant.

#3: WR Torry Holt. Holt has always been a great to very solid pick as a dependable top notch receiver who would get good point numbers every single week like clockwork. This season? Disaster doesn't even begin to describe it. Dismal averages of 4 catches, 44 yards, and 0 TD a week have sent more than one fantasy owner crying.

#2: RB Larry Johnson. This bonehead could be number one for many people. He was ranked a preseason 35 and is an actual 107. Most of those points came in only two games, and he's managed to get suspended for several games. This is a screw up on a level that could actually sink fantasy teams.

#1: RB Stephen Jackson. Yahoo preseason ranking 11, actual 68th. Many thought Jackson was a top 3 running back, and a top 5 pick. If you thought that, chances are you're watching everyone else fight for the play-offs. Jackson is number one because he was drafted so high by so many. In some leagues Jackson and Tom Brady are on the same roster...those people are hated by the fantasy gods.
