The Best Fashion Styles and Looks of the Decade

Tunics. Great to throw over a bathing suit as well as wear to the office, these loose, formless tops were excellent for those "fat days". They had an international flair coming in a large range of colors and with assorted adornments and patterns, and even could be worn as a dress or top with leggings underneath.

The boho look. Made popular by British actress Sienna Miller, and Mary Kate Olsen in the middle of the decade, the look consisted of a bohemian or hippie, natural style with over sized everything: sunglasses, skirts, hats, and handbags.

Scarves. What once was used to keep warm in cold weather became a fashion accessory staple, with even those in 80 degree weather sporting skinny style scarves. Throwing a stylish scarf over a white t-shirt and easily turns a boring and classic look into a trendy and stylish one.

Big framed glasses. Sunglasses were even more popular then ever in this decade, and with each year the frames seemed to get larger and larger. Although glass styles like aviators still remained popular in fashion. Even though the cost of designer glasses can be as much as $250, this is still affordable to a large amount of the population and thus allowed the average Joe to own a piece of fashion from a high fashion house (such as D+G, Gucci, or Kate Spade) where they could not afford shoes or clothing typically.

Faux Fur. Social consciousness and the increasing visibility of animal rights activists led to the decline of sporting real fur, and embracing faux furs. Even though some actresses and other Hollywood stars continue to wear fur clothing, it doesn't go unnoticed by the socially conscious.

Leggings. Ankle skimming, trimmed with studs, zippers, or leather, cuffed bottoms or skinny style, leggings were worn as pants underneath skirts and tunics or under over sized sweaters. The look is comfortable and easy.

Eco-fashion. The "Green" movement was even extended to clothing in this decade with the popularity of Eco clothes made from recycled items, Eco and organic fabrics, and ethical trade and manufacturing emphasized. Fabrics made from hemp, bamboo, and vegetable tanned rather then leather. This look complimented both the vegan lifestyle as well as those that strive to reduce their carbon footprint. The clothing style increased greatly, but is not in widespread as the costs of these types of clothing still remains much higher than traditional clothing.

Pajamas as street wear. Thanks to Juicy Couture, and Victoria's Secret Pink line, wearing what we use to wear to bed became chic and fashionable as street wear in the past decade. With workplaces continuing to relax their dress codes, people continued the trend in their personal lives.

Metallics. Metallics became the new neutral in this decade. From shoes and bags to dresses, the colors go with everything and can be worn either day or night. Even towards the end of the decade when color became less popular in fashion as the economy declined and spending decreased, metallics remained popular.
