Top 10 Fictional Geeks of 2007: The Guys

Biggest Geeks of 2007

Pam Gaulin
Disclaimer: The word geek is used in a positive way. I love geeks, smart people, quirky folks, and tech-minded people.

Top 10 Fictional Geeks of 2007: The Guys

#10 Riley Poole from National Treasure: Book of Secrets

Justin Bartha plays Riley Poole just geeky enough to make this list. Riley Poole gets the funny lines, and is the sidekick, but he is also a geek.

Riley Poole uses his intelligence to come up with the funny quips (yes, it was the writers). Some of his jokes may go over the heads of some people. He is also a computer whiz.

#9: Chuck from Chuck on NBC

Chuck on the TV show Chuck debuted his geekiness this year. Chuck is an extremely likable computer geek by day, who inadvertently is living out a life of an undercover agent for the CIA.

#8: Jason Bourne in The Bourne Ultimatum

Matt Damon, even though he made the cover as People Magazine's Sexiest Man of the Year, also played two of the geekiest characters of the year in 2007. It was hard to choose between his portrayal of Linus Caldwell in Ocean's Thirteen, and his Jason Bourne in The Bourne Ultimatum.

There must be something naturally geeky about Matt Damon, because he also nailed another true geek who happened to be psychotic, in the adaptation of the the Patricia Highsmith character, Tom Ripley.

Maybe it was his geekiness which People Magazine found so sexy!

#7: House on Fox's House M.D.

Hugh Laurie proved himself in the days of Jeeves and Wooster, with House, he takes his talent to a whole new level. House is both a life saver and a misanthrope. He is highly intelligent, get socially inept. He is logical yet lacks some common sense.

Hugh Laurie manages to turn House into a geek we like despite ourselves and our first inclination to not look beyond his surface behavior.

#6: Gaius Baltar on Sci-Fi's Battlestar Gallactica

Gaius Baltar on Battlestar Gallactica is a genius who is also very warped. He is too intelligent for his own good, like a true fictional geek. He is also a social pariah, at the extreme end of geekdom in space.

He spends a lot of time in his sexual fantasy world, and channeling the Maquis de Sade persona, in his obsession with writing his thoughts. James Callis plays Gaius Baltar in such a way that you have to love him and hate him at the same time.

#5: Peter Parker in Spiderman 3

Peter Parker gets geekier as Spider Man gets more super hero-like. Tobey MaGuire made Peter Parker into such a Pollyanna that Spider Man 3 was almost impossible to watch when he was on screen. Tobey Parker made us cringe with the amount of geekiness he poured into Peter Parker in this year's Spiderman 3.

#4: Gil Grissom on CSI

Bug-loving, uber-intelligent, whose secretly into domination and submission, Gil Grissom is definitely one of the top fictional geeks of 2007. One pleasing attributes of geeks is their acceptance of sex, and their ability to be non-judgmental about sexual preferences, sexual acts, and the mechanics of sex in general.

#3Leonard on CBS' The Big Bang Theory

Johnny Galecki, best known for his role as Darlene's boyfriend on Roseanne, has come again into the public eye with his portrayal of Leonard on The Big Bang Theory on CBS. While Jim Parsons who plays Sheldon is truly a bigger geek, Johnny Galecki as Leonard is a better geek.

Johnny Galecki plays Leonard as highly intelligent, yet accessible. Leonard has issues that many people can relate to, including trouble with the opposite sex.

#2: Ben Gates from National Treasure

Nicolas Cage, as Ben Gates, in National Treasure: Book of Secrets is also one of the best fictional geeks of 2007. Nicolas Cage as Ben Gates manages once again to make intelligence, studying and persistence cool. Not many actors could pull of Ben Gates as being so cool and geeky at the same time.

#1: Hiro on NBC's Heroes

The best fictional geek of 2007 has to be Hiro Nakamura on Heroes. Hiro Nakamura, as portrayed by Masi Oka is the ultimate smart, sweet, geek with a passion for justice and all that is right. He will go to any lengths to carry out the task at hand, and had dedicated himself to being a hero.

His day job is as a "level 3 programmer," but in his real life, where his childhood fantasies and nightmares have both come to life, he is the ultimate hero.

Hiro Nakamura is not only the best fictional geek of 2007, he is also one of the most endearing characters to appear on a TV show, ever.

I'm so in mental lust with Gil - but then I can be rather geeky myself. :-)

Sorry, Jack, House is also socially inept (especially when it comes to women) :-)

  • Jack Oceano1/4/2008

Great list! But not House! He's just an intellectual who hates people! Many intellectuals do!

  • Smorg1/4/2008

Great list! I don't know if I'd call Jason Bourne a geek, but I like the company he's keeping. :o)
