10. Ernest Saves Christmas (1988) Jim Varney, Douglas Seale, Oliver Clark, Noelle Parker
Often zany, sometimes silly, but always entertaining, Ernest Saves Christmas is based on the unlikely scenario surrounding an aging Santa (Douglas Seale) who comes to town hoping to recruit Joe Curruthers (Oliver Clark) to be his successor. As always when Ernest is around, things go horribly wrong and Ernest (Jim Varney) turns out to be the only hope. With the help of a runaway named Harmony Star (Noelle Parker), Ernest embarks on a highly entertaining and madcap adventure, and in the end, well, Ernest saves Christmas. If you like Ernest and are in the mood for some major silly, you'll like this. "Know what I mean, Vern?"
9 . The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) Michael Caine, Dave Goelz, Donald Austen, Jessica Fox, Steven Mackintosh, Karen Prell
Combining Jim Henson's Muppets with Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol will result in just about what you would expect, The Muppet Christmas Carol . This is a funny Christmas movie that kids and adults can both enjoy. The movie is the first Muppet production after Jim Henson's death, and it has lots and lots of Muppets. The lessons written into Charles Dickens' masterpiece cannot be overshadowed, even by hundreds of singing and dancing puppets, so in the end, as with much of Jim Henson's work, we enjoy ourselves while we learn.
8. Jingle All the Way (1996) Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sinbad, Phil Hartman, Rita Wilson, Robert Conrad, James Belushi, Laraine Newman, Harvey Koran, Jake Lloyd
Howard Langston (Arnold Schwarzenegger) disappoints his son Jamie (Jake Lloyd) once again, by missing karate grading, and plans to make up for it by showing up with Jamie's main Christmas wish, Turbo Man, the hot toy for the season. Langston joins the other Turbo Man hunters in a "day before Christmas" shopping ritual familiar to all too many of us. It all turns out well, sort of. With a star studded comic cast, Jingle All the Way is sure to have some memorable performances, and Sinbad is the popular choice this time.
7. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989) Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Juliette Lewis, Johnny Galecki, John Randolph, Diane Ladd
The Griswold family has already screwed up vacations to Wally World, Las Vegas, and Europe. Why should staying home for Christmas Vacation be any different? Turns out it isn't. Between the crazy relatives, the 25,000 Christmas lights, the bonus that wasn't, and the super-sledding, Christmas vacation turns into one hilarious scene after another.
6. Elf (2003) Will Ferrell, James Caan, Bob Newhart, Edward Asner, Mary Steenburgen, Zooy Deschanel, Daniel Tay.
Buddy (Will Ferrell) makes me laugh like few movie characters. Elf is considered one of Will Ferrell's best efforts. Buddy slips into Santa's toy sack as an infant and is raised by elves at the North Pole. He comes back to New York as an adult to re-connect with his family, and the path to reorientation is jam packed with outrageous naivete.
5. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) Jim Carey, Taylor Momsen, Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski,
A Ron Howard film adaptation of Dr. Suess starring Jim Carey, How the Grinch Stole Christmas was destined for greatness. A brilliantly compelling story, actors with unbridled youthful exuberance, and a truckload full of superb costuming, effects, directing and camera work. Of course there is humor, how could there not be humor when Dr. Suess meets Jim Carey, but this film is much more than comedy. It captures the truth of the story on several levels, and could easily be said to pass for a modern day morality play, with jokes.
4. The Santa Clause (1994) Tim Allen, Wendy Crewson, Judge Reinhold, Eric Lloyd, David Krumholtz, Larry Brandenburg
Just as Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) is about to relay the ugly truth about Santa to his six year old son Charlie, the real Santa takes a fall from the roof and Scott has to fill in because of the "Santa Clause". Nobody believes him except Charlie, at least not at first. The individual transformations from unbelief to belief are portrayed in typical Tim Allen style, with plenty of humor.
3. Home Alone (1990) Mccaulay Caulkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, John Heard, Roberts Blossom, Catherine O'Hara, Angela Goethals, Devin Ratray, Gerry Bamman, Hillary Wolf, John Candy, Larry Hankin
Eight year old Kevin (Mccaulay Caulkin) is left Home Alone when his family fails to correctly count noses as they take off for a Christmas vacation in France. Of course two would-be burglars soon discover what they believe to be easy pickings, an empty house at Christmas. Turns out Kevin has all sorts of wacky booby traps in store for the overconfident and inept criminals, and the game is on. Modern slapstick at its best.
2. Scrooged (1988) Bill Murray, Karen Allen, Robert Mitchum, Jamie Farr, Robert Goulet
Frank Cross (Bill Murray) runs a TV station like a modern day Scrooge, and like Ebeneezer, there is only one possible result, he gets Scrooged . Only this is not your father's angel of Christmas past, and this is a "Scrooge" like no other. Only a few comedic actors could carry a movie, and Murray at his best, is one. This is among Murray's best, along with "Groundhog Day" and "Caddyshack".
1. A Christmas Story (1983) Melinda Dillon, Darren McGavin, Peter Billingsley, Ian Petrella
It isn't hard to name A Christmas Story as the best Christmas comedy movie of all time. Nobody who has watched it will ever forget when Ralphie (Peter Billingsly) stuck his tongue to the flagpole or the time Dad (Darren McGavin) bought the sexy-leg lamp. Then there was the day Ralphie nearly killed the neighborhood bully, and Christmas dinner at the Chinese restaurant. I don't think there will ever be a better Christmas comedy.
