Top 10 Go-Go's Songs

One of My Favorite Bands of the 80's

Sherri Thornhill
I loved the Go-Go's in the 80's and I still love their music today. They took me from 6th grade through graduation with their punk-pop music. The Go-Go's started as a punk band in 1978 in Los Angeles, California. Their sound developed into more radio friendly pop songs when they released their first album, Beauty and the Beat.

I had no idea as a kid that these girls in the Go-Go's were far from the sweet, innocent young ladies I thought them to be. By their own admissions, they were doing drugs and sleeping with a lot of people, truly living the "Rock Star" lifestyle. They have all cleaned up their lives now and what I didn't know then didn't kill me. I looked up to them because they were a successful all-girl band. I have a thing for girl power and they certainly exuded it.

So, although I love every song my Go-Go's ever sang, I narrowed it down to just 10 that are my picks for their top songs. Here they are:

10.)Fading Fast. "You had me all to your self, I thought that you were such a prize. I finally came to my senses, cause I heard just one too many lies.." This song from Beauty and the Beat was not a big radio hit. It described my teen angst so well though, that it was one of the songs I played over and over, back in the day when we had cassette tapes. Love it.

9.) This Town. "This town is our town, this town is so glamorous. Bet you'd live here if you could and be one of us." This was another great song from Beauty and the Beat. This song brought out the sarcasm in my friends and I. We lived in Fresno, not exactly glamorous. I knew no one that was jealous of me living there. So we use to sing along with this one as if we were talking about Fresno and the wonderful lives we had. Fake it 'til you make it, right?

8.) I'm the Only One. This was from their 3rd album, Talk Show. Great fast beat song, fun to jump around and dance to. It's one you sing to the person you're dating when you're trying to convince them you are the only one that would date them. Ok, that's just my interpretation.

7.) Get Up and Go. This one got to show off the drummer, Gina Schock's drum skills, and I loved the drums. We also get to hear some solos from Jane Wiedlin on guitar and Kathy Valentine on bass. These girls rocked this song on their 2nd album, Vacation.

6.) You Thought. Oh, another angst song to be sure. I loved it though; I read the words to the song many times and wished I could write like that. "Don't you stop to wonder what's going wrong, when everything you loved has come and gone?" This one was from Talk Show, no airplay, and that was a shame.

5.) Turn to You. I don't know why the album Talk Show was so disappointing sales wise. It was my favorite Go-Go's album and anyone who didn't buy it, lost out. It's not too late, go buy it right now! "You act so tough, but I know what you're doing. You think falling in love, means falling to ruin.."

4.) Head Over Heels. I'm getting redundant here, but it's another great song from Talk Show. It did fairly well on the radio and MTV. Anyone that hears the first few chords of music by Charlotte Caffey on keyboards, knows it is Go-Go's music at its finest. "Head over heels why should I go? Can't stop myself, out of control. Head over heels no time to think, it's like the whole world's out of synch."

3.) Vacation. This hit song was from the Vacation album of course. "When you looked at me I should have run, but I thought it was just for fun...Vacation all I ever wanted, vacation happy to get away." Remember the video of the Go-Go's ladies water skiing and waving. I thought it was great, but I was pretty young. It does make me laugh to see it now.

2.) Our Lips are Sealed. This was one of their hit songs from Beauty and the Beat. Now admit it, you sang along to it back in the day. That terrific beat, got my toes tapping and my pathetic excuse for dance moves shown off in my bedroom mirror. "Doesn't matter what they say, it's a jealous game people play. Hey hey hey, our lips are sealed." Belinda Carlisle could get anyone to sing along in their car and be a temporary Go-Go, don't deny it, I saw you singing.

1.) We Got the Beat. I remember this song from 6th grade. I bought the Beauty and the Beat cassette with my allowance money. It was a good investment because I used it when a few of my female classmates and I put on a puppet show. We each made a Go-Go's puppet out of an empty toilet paper roll and then played this song and pretended to put on a concert for the class. That was our talent show for Mr. Snelling's class. Even he got a laugh out of it. And in case you were wondering, I was the toilet paper drummer, Gina Schock. We were a hit and I have a lifetime memory of my time as a member of the Go-Go's.

You can find and listen to all these songs for free on songza.com. That website has a lot of great music, so type in your favorite band and don't be afraid to dance.
