Top 10 Graduation Bible Verses for Cards and Letters

Scriptures and Sentiments for Special Graduates

Linda Ann Nickerson
As the traditional academic year comes to a close, schools hold commencement ceremonies. Parents proudly applaud for their beaming graduates, who are marking their memories and stepping into their bright futures.

Graduation parties fill our calendars, as we scour greeting card stores for graduation cards, notes and gifts to recognize the academic achievements of those we love.

How can we make our graduation cards and letters more memorable? What can we include, to make our graduation salutations more special? How about selecting a Bible verse or two to fit the proud graduation occasion?

Graduation-Appropriate Scriptures

Choosing personalized passages (Bible verses) from the Word of God is a super way to make a graduation greeting card or commencement gift unique and meaningful.

Are you handy with your computer? How about selecting several Scriptures and printing them on card stock, then cutting them into stacks and constructing a personalized packet of Bible memory cards for graduation? Choose the translation you like best, as you pick out your Bible verses. (Several Bible translations are listed at the end of this article.)

Perhaps you will decide to create a Scripture bookmark, magnet or laminated bookmark for a proud graduate? If you are particularly crafty, you might cross-stitch or embroider favorite Bible verses onto a commencement throw pillow, eyeglasses case or other great graduation gift item.

Or you could include a special graduation-appropriate Bible verse on a scrapbook page or cover. After the commencement ceremony, you might collect the graduation photographs and arrange them in the scrapbook as a graduation gift.

You may already have a few favorite Bible verses that have particular meaning for your favorite graduate. Here are ten super graduation-appropriate Scriptures to get you started. (Scripture reference links have been included, so you can easily find these Bible verses in an online Bible.)

Bible Promises for Graduates

Here are our top ten most memorable and meaningful Bible verses for graduates, arranged in biblical order.

Graduation Benediction

"God bless you and keep you,
God smile on you and gift you,
God look you full in the face
and make you prosper."
(Numbers 6:24-26, MSG)

God told Moses to instruct Aaron and his sons to speak this benediction (or blessing) over the children of Israel.

This wonderful Bible passage and prayer is also appropriate for graduation greetings and commencement ceremonies. Invoking the blessing of the Lord over graduating seniors, particularly by quoting Bible verses, is the greatest gift one can offer them.

Graduation Courage

"So be strong and courageous!
Do not be afraid,
and do not panic before them.
For the Lord your God
will personally go
ahead of you.
He will neither fail you
nor abandon you."
(Deuteronomy 31:6, TLB)

As an old man (120 years old), Moses admonished the people of Israel this way. Moses knew his final days were numbered, and the Israelites would soon enter the Promised Land without him.

The patriarch's words are appropriate for graduation greetings and commencement ceremonies, because these Bible verses encourage young adults to stand strong and to be bold in the face of challenge. As this year's crop of graduates embarks on a new stage of life, they may be exhorted by these Bible verses to greater faith in the Lord, who accompanies those who trust Him fully.

The Apostle Paul made a similar statement in his New Testament letter to the Roman church: "What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31, NIV)

Graduation offers a unique teachable moment, when Bible verses may be quoted and young people may be urged to stand strong in their faith in God.

Graduation Strength

"Have not I commanded thee?
Be strong
and of a good courage;
be not afraid,
neither be thou dismayed:
for the LORD thy God
is with thee
whithersoever thou goest."
(Joshua 1:9, KJV)

After Moses' death, the Lord spoke directly to Joshus, son of Nun, appointing him to leadership of His people.

This biblical declaration is truly fitting for graduation greetings and commencement ceremonies. Graduating seniors will soon encounter many important life changes and decisions. Courage and strength will be required of them, and this Bible verse may encourage graduates greatly.

Graduation Integrity

"Trust the LORD
and live right!
The land will be yours,
and you will be safe.
Do what the LORD wants,
and He will give you
your heart's desire."
( Psalm 37:3-4, CEV)

King David, the Psalmist, penned these words to bring strength to those facing opposition and persecution from wrongdoers.

Graduates may find these Bible verses personally applicable, as they enter higher education or the workforce. The world can be a difficult place for people of integrity, and enthusiastic young adults may become frustrated. These Bible verses can be highlights of graduation greetings and commencement ceremonies, while offering a firm foundation for graduates' futures.

Graduation Learning

"Your word is like a lamp
that shows me the way.
It is like a light
that guides me."
(Psalm 119:105, NiRV)

This often-quoted Bible verse comes from the very center of the entire Bible. Psalm 199 is the longest chapter in the Scriptures, and the bulk of it focuses on the value of studying and memorizing God's Word, the Bible.

This Scripture, included in graduation greetings and commencement ceremonies, reminds graduates of the greatest source of wisdom and direction ever available to mankind. As graduating seniors begin life after school, they will benefit from continued study and learning of God's Word.

Although many graduates may have completed their formal academic training by the time they participate in commencement ceremonies, their lifelong learning has only begun.

Graduation Confidence

"Lean on,
trust in,
and be confident
in the Lord
with all your heart
and mind a
nd do not rely
on your own insight
or understanding.
In all your ways
know, recognize,
and acknowledge Him,
and He will direct
and make straight
and plain your paths."
(Proverbs 3:5-6)

These familiar Bible verses, memorized by many Sunday school children, clearly offer simple and significant Scriptural truth. Those who look to the Lord for guidance will never be disappointed.

Quoted here in the Amplified Version, for greater emphasis, this proverbial Scripture passage is most suitable for graduation greetings and commencement ceremonies. As students complete their educational programs and march in graduation proceedings, they may ponder their adult lives to come. These Bible verses, taken from the book of Proverbs, offer both wisdom and comfort to graduates.

Graduation Hope

"There is surely
a future hope for you,
and your hope
will not be cut off.
Listen, my son,
and be wise,
and keep your heart
on the right path."
(Proverbs 23:18-19, NIV)

The Old Testament book of Proverbs fairly overflows with wisdom and sage instruction for graduates and others. Smart sayings for daily life are the stuff of biblical Proverbs.

This Scriptural statement, containing a wonderful promise, is a super Bible verse text for graduation greetings and commencement ceremonies. What graduating senior, contemplating his or her future plans, does not desire hope and promise?

Graduation Faith

"But beyond this,
my son, be warned:
the writing of many books
is endless,
and excessive devotion
to books
is wearying to the body.
The conclusion,
when all has been heard,
is fear God and
keep His commandments,
because this applies
to very person."
(Ecclesiastes 12:12-13, NASB)

The Old Testament Bible book of Ecclesiastes claims its own authorship as "the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem" (Ecclesiastes 1:1, NASB). Most Bible scholars believe King Solomon, the son of King David, wrote the book of Ecclesiastes.

The final chapter of Ecclesiastes opens with this statement: "Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth" (Ecclesiastes 12:1a, NASB). This is an excellent admonition for students and graduates alike.

The same chapter closes with the warning about superfluous writings and books. Ecclesiastes 12:12 may sound satirical to some listeners. For millennia, reluctant scholars have claimed this Bible verse, in their attempts to exempt themselves from studying, even to prepare for graduation greetings and commencement ceremonies.

However, the writer's meaning was very different. The truth is revealed in Ecclesiastes 12:13, which points to faith in God and simple obedience to Him. How often do Bible students and others attempt to review and redefine these basic Bible truths?

What a wonderful admonition these Bible verses may offer to graduating seniors and commencement audiences alike, as we all may be blessed by believing and obeying the Lord.

Graduation Power

"Those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint."
(Isaiah 40:31)

The Old Testament prophet Isaiah opened this Bible chapter with this wonderful statement: "'Comfort, comfort my people,' says your God" (Isaiah 40:1, NIV).

The closing Bible verses of Isaiah 40 (as quoted above), offer special comfort and exhortation for graduation greetings and commencement ceremonies. By hoping in God and walking in His power, graduating seniors may look to the future with confidence. Surely, those who understand these Bible verses and lean on God will realize new enthusiasm, energy and empowerment for living.

Graduation Plans

"'For I know the plans
I have for you,'
says the Lord.
'They are plans for good
and not for disaster,
to give you a future
and a hope.'"
(Jeremiah 29:11, NLT)

Jeremiah, the weeping prophet of the Old Testament, penned these words to encourage God's people that the Lord would rescue them from Babylonian captivity.

Although graduating seniors may feel as if they are experiencing a newfound release from captivity, leaving the academic confines of their alma maters, this Bible verse actually offers more universal application. Certainly, God offers a wonderful life plan for anyone who trusts in Him.

In my personal Bible, I have written my own children's names in the margin, right next to Jeremiah 29:11. This Bible verse is my prayer for my kids. May they look to the Lord, and may He guide them in His perfect plan for their lives.

This Bible verse is ideal for graduation greetings and commencement ceremonies, as graduates will launch into new chapters of life, facing adulthood and many major decisions. This Bible verse promises hope and blessing for those who seek God's will first.

Graduation Bible Gifts

Graduation greetings and commencement ceremonies present wonderful opportunities for parents, grandparents and other special people to give graduates thoughtful heirloom gifts. Why not purchase a classic study Bible for your graduate? As a bonus, you might add a few pretty bookmarks listing favorite Bible verses to your graduation gift.

You can order a custom-embossed Bible with the graduate's own name (and graduation date) imprinted on the front cover. Bible bookstores and online Bible retailers offer this service for just a few dollars. What a wonderful way to build a lasting memory and legacy.
