Top 10 Great Mysteries of the World

Timothy Sexton

Science has killed demon possession for most of us. Science has also proven that neither huge sculptures of human like faces or little green men can be found on Mars. Damn science, what a bunch of party poopers. Still, the world remains a mysterious place and many of those mysteries are still mysteries to those who love unexplained mysteries. This list of 10 unexplained mysteries just barely begins to touch the surface of the depth of the unexplained that has gripped imaginations for centuries.

10. The Mary Celeste
The story of the Mary Celeste is not exactly obscure, but also not nearly as well known as the Bermuda Triangle. This mystery of the world took place in 1872 and starred a sailing ship known as the Mary Celeste. The ship was found adrift in the Atlantic Ocean with nary a soul aboard. The cause of the mysterious disappearances has been a subject of theories ranging from the likely to the weird. Piracy seems out because nothing was stolen, a tidal wave or raging storm would have done great damage to the ship and abduction by aliens just seems a little too ridiculous.

9. Shroud of Turin
Carbon dating showed that the Shroud of Turin could not possibly have been the burial cloak of Jesus Christ because it was creating several centuries too late. That certainty has been called into question because it now appears that the part of the Shroud of Turin that was tested may have been added later on. This is a great mystery of the world regardless of whether Jesus was involved or not. How the heck did they do it?

8. Geoglyphs
Those features carved into the pampas of Peru can only be seen from above. So why would ancient civilizations go through the trouble of creating them? UFOs always seem to be at the center of this great mystery of the world and it seems about as good an explanation as anything science has come up with so far.

7. Antikythera Mechanism
This great mystery of the past was almost unknown to most people just a few years ago, but it is quickly making a beeline for its deserved place alongside Bigfoot and Nessie. The Antikythera Mechanism was discovered beneath the surface of the water off the coast of Greece. The mystery here is how such an ancient device could be constructed with such a complex gear mechanism. One conclusion is that this mystery has been solved with the identification of it as a device used for astronomical calculations. Maybe. Maybe not.

6. Bermuda Triangle
This little trapezoid in the Atlantic has supposedly swallowed up planes and ships by the hundreds without leaving a trace behind. Theoretical suppositions range from such things as the fact that this area is subject to many storms and much bad weather to the idea of an electromagnetic fog that disorients those who come into contact. This is probably one great mysteries of the world that will never be proven or debunked entirely to those with an interest.

5. Dragons
Dragons are a mythical creature that are represented in art across the world and across civilizations. Why would both the Chinese and Europeans create the same kind of animal that didn't actually exist unless they had some reason to believe they actually existed. Almost all pictures of dragons made centuries ago bear a sharp resemblance no matter where the picture was drawn. The biggest difference seems to be that European dragons were vicious animals that had to be killed while Chinese dragons are revered.

4. Aliens
Aliens and UFOs would certainly rank higher on this list of greatest mysteries of the world if so dang much of the evidence in favor of them couldn't be scientifically explained. Aliens represent a kind of boogey man to all of us that can help explain away things are conscious mind is not capable of dealing with. That said, I have no doubt in my mind that the Earth was visited by alien creatures at some point way, way back in her past.

3. Atlantis
Almost certainly Atlantis never actually existed. This great mystery of the world can pretty much be explained away as a metaphorical piece of fiction. Some stories just aren't meant to be taken literally, yet are still quite useful and instructional. Atlantis qualifies.

2. Bigfoot and the Yeti
That famous footage has supposedly been explained as a guy with a Bigfoot suit walking away from the guy filming the movie. Don't believe it. The presence of a huge, hairy humanlike ape creature stretches from the thick woods of the Pacific Northwest to the snowy wilderness at the top of the Himalayas. No less a figure than Edmund Hillary, credited as the first person to reach the peak of Everest, went back to those mountains in search of the Yeti. He could not debunk or prove its existence.

1. Nessie
The Loch Ness Monster is situated at the number one spot of greatest unexplained mysteries of the world simply because it is such a well known mystery. Who the heck hasn't heard of the Loch Ness Monster. Faked photos don't explain the many sightings so you may want to keep an open mind even on this one.
