1. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin - Jimmy Page - Stairway to Heaven, without a doubt, should be number one or atleast close to it on anyone's greatest guitar solos list. Though it is not the fastest nor the most technical solo, it is the most heartfelt and momentum building solo ever. Page even admits that his solo in this song was a bit of an adventure. He recorded 3 different solos for the song and thankfully chose the one that we all know today.
2. Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd - David Gilmour - Here is one of the more inspiring solos. It is the complete opposite of a fast solo, as it takes a few minutes to build into a great solo. Any Pink Floyd fan could agree that Comfortably Numb could possibly be the greatest solo to ever be played.
3. Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Allen Collins - Made popular in the mainstream audience through Guitar Hero, Free Bird is almost a mixture of Stairway to Heaven and Eruption. Now at first it seems ridiculous to compare these songs, but Stairway to Heaven takes a large momentum building approach, while Eruption just lays the solo on with overpowering notes. Free Bird takes a while for the solo to begin, but once it does, the song really kicks in and is a blast to listen to.
4. All Along The Watchtower -The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Not only does this song have one of the best guitar solos ever in it, it is also widely accepted as the best cover of any song. When Bob Dylan made All Along the Watchtower, he could have never guessed how big the song would be, even if it wasn't his song. Jimi Hendrix took a classic song and made it his own through his distinct voice and sound.
5. Eruption - Van Halen - Eddie Van Halen - Here is probably the greatest pure guitar solo song there is. Eruption begins with a solo, ends with a solo, and never lets go. For the minute or so the song goes on, it introduces us to a completely new form of guitar. When Eddie Van Halen introduced us to tapping, he took this song to the next level by implementing it into Eruption.
6. Layla - Derek and the Dominos - Eric Clapton/Duane Allman - When Eric Clapton and Duane Allman made this song and played their guitar, I was blown away. The flow of this song with two lead guitars going is unimaginable. After listening to the introduction of this song you just know that this is going to end great. The first time I heard this song I thought the solo in it was going to blow me out of the water. It did, but in a completely different way than I thought. This is one of the most interesting solos I have ever listened to. Instead of overpowering the listeners, the song slows down for the last half and plays a real heartfelt solo accompanied with a piano that really does touch the heart.
7. One - Metallica - Kirk Hammet - Venturing away from slow and heartfelt solos, here is Metallica. One was also made famous in the mainstream through Guitar Hero. This song hits with a bang and doesn't stop. After about 5 minutes, the solo begins to kick in and that is where you just feel like punching something, its that intense!
8. Crossroads - Eric Clapton - Eric Clapton - Again Eric Clapton makes this list. Clapton has made many great songs, but this one easily surpasses any of his other's because of the solo. Clapton has worked with others in this song that have made Crossroads a classic.
9. Hotel California - The Eagles - Don Felder / Joe Walsh - Here is another soft rock song that has made the list. Hotel California, after the first note, is obvious that this song is going to be good. The notes just seem to flow off the guitar as if it anyone could play the solo. This song has become a cult classic in the music industry and will never fade away.
10. Cliffs of Dover - Eric Johnson - Eric Johnson - Here is one of the most underappreciated solos ever. Eric Johnson created an instrumental masterpiece with Cliffs of Dover. The first time I listened to it, I could not believe what I was hearing as the guitar just kept on going!
