Jacqueline Winslow
Every year, children across the country prepare to take achievement tests or similar tests that vary from state to state. These tests may be different from state to state, but the general purpose is the same. Teachers and parents learn more about where the student is academically, and what subjects each child needs to work more on.

No matter what grade your child is in, it is important that your child is prepared to take these tests. Not only can your child feel good about taking these tests, as a parent, you will learn about how your child is doing. It is important for parents to know what subjects their child thrive in and what subjects need more work. Although these tests are meant more for the teachers than parents, parents can utilize these test to stay on top of how their child is doing in school.

For home schoolers, these tests aren't necessarily going to be informative, but will prepare the child for college. For home school parents, they typically have a good idea of how their child is doing. AS a home school mom, I find that I learn more about how my child is excelling than that subjects they need more work on. If I do see a subject they are struggling with, I can take the next year, to really focus on that subject. By doing this, I ensure their next achievement test scores will go up in that particular subject.

As parents, we want our children to do their best. We can significantly help our kids as they prepare for big tests by things we do at home. Sadly, we can't take the tests for our kids but what we can do is make sure they are as prepared as possible. There are many tests they will take throughout their school years: weekly tests, achievement tests, PSAT, SAT, and the ACT. Each of these important to your child's education. By making sure they are prepared, they can make higher scores.

Study and Prepare for Tests with Child

It sounds redundant to say to study, but what I mean is that parents should study with your child. Quiz them on subjects throughout the year. Make sure they know the subjects at hand. by studying with them, you are preparing them for that particular test, but also for end of year tests such as Achievement tests, PSAT's, ACT's, and SAT's. Every little thing you do throughout the year is one step closer to a high grade.

Many times, you can help your child by having them begin taking practice tests. At Test Prep Review, your child can take make different practice tests. Check to see what end of year test you need, then check with the website.

Talk with Child's Teacher

Many times, children can be very nervous about taking tests. Find out from the child's teacher how they do before, during, and after taking tests throughout the week. If your child gets nervous, talk to them and find out why they get nervous. Often times, talking things out are just what the child needs. Make them feel comfortable about sharing and talking about how they feel.

Make Sure Child is in School During Tests

How many times did we have our own parents schedule doctors appointments because we knew there was a big test that day? Oh, that was me. If your child was like many of us, they will try to avoid taking tests by having an outside appointment. Avoid this by knowing what is going on in your child's education. Have a schedule and make sure your child is at school during big tests such as Achievement tests. Many school web-sites will have a online calendar of all major events helping you know what is happening throughout the year.

Learn About Test Scores

Sometimes there are differences in the scores on the achievement tests and your child's actual school grades. There could be many reasons for this. It is your job to find out why. One reason could be that your child struggled for some reason during the test. They could also have difficulty with a particular subject. The reasons are endless, to be honest. But if they are doing good in school and do badly on the Achievement tests, it will be up to you to find out why they did good on one and not the other. Unfortunately, no one ever said that being a parent was going to be an easy process. Isn't life grand!!?

Sleep is Mandatory

Everyone knows that we need sleep. What is important for kids is important for adults. The difference is that kids often have to take tests the next day and need to have their entire faculties about them. Getting at least eight hours of sleep can really help them do better on their testing. If you aren't quite sure, try it out. See how your children do with more sleep and then without. I am betting they will do better when they have more sleep. The bonus is that you will get a few hours of quite with everyone asleep--hopefully!

Teach Children to Listen

Isn't this something we learned in Parenting 101? The truth is that during big tests such as Achievement tests, the more children listen, the better they will do on tests. There are often many instructions given during these tests. If kids decide to tune out the teacher, this could dramatically hurt their tests scores because they don't listen to what needs to be done. The answer is just to remind them that they need to listen to each instruction given as it will be important on that section of the test. The happy part is that you can practice with them at home -- listening the first time!

Breakfast is Vital

This is funny as I hate breakfast but getting a full meal is extremely helpful to doing our best. On those days we don't eat breakfast, don't you know we start getting hungry earlier than we should? It is for this reasons and lots others that kids should eat a full breakfast before taking big tests. Whether it is a bowl of oatmeal, cereal, or a sausage biscuit from McDonald's, just make sure they are well fed.

Encouragement is Needed

Every child wants to know their parents are proud of them. For this reason, make sure you encourage them before, during, and after the Achievement tests or other testing. Remind them that if they give their best, thats all you can ask for. We want our kids to work for the good grades, then they can enjoy the testing because they already know the information needed. There may be parts of the testing that they do not know, but for the most part, they should know the majority of the questions on the test.

Home schooler Resource

If you are a home school parent, taking Achievement tests are important to prepare your child for high school and college. Learn how your child is doing, what they are excelling in, and encourage them to do better. Hopefully, your child can and should score at least one grade higher than their grade on the testing. This is a wonderful sign that you are doing well in home school. On subjects that need improvement, work on those subjects more during the few months to help your child do better the next year.

If you would like to do testing at home, go to Family Learning Organization to order your Achievement tests. These tests do not go through the public school system, but are graded by Family Learning Organization. You only have so long to take the tests once you receive them, and then send them back.

Stay Informed

Keep in touch with your children's teachers to know exactly how they are doing in school. The more you know, the more you can help them on individual subjects. There is nothing more rewarding than learning your child has made the honor roll. What's even better is knowing we had a hand in making sure our kids are totally prepared for ever test they take.
