Top 10 Indoor Exercise Ideas for Winter

A "No-Excuses" Guide to Keep Fit This Winter!

Just because it is cold outside is not an excuse to stop exercising! Here are some indoor exercise ideas you can use to keep fit.

1.) Mall Walking -- An indoor mall is a wonderful place to walk in the winter time. Most malls are open seven days a week so you can go almost any time. There are long straight stretches which are comfortable for most walkers. Some malls have more than one level, so you can go up and down the stairs as well for a more intense cardio workout. There are interesting things to see as you walk so you shouldn't get bored. Don't bring anything you have to carry in your hands so you can swing your arms freely. A fanny pack or small back pack should carry your water bottle, wallet and car keys. If you don't think you can walk too far yet, try going to a Walmart Super Center. These are big stores, lots of walking - but you can get a shopping cart to hold on to.

2.) Buy and wear a pedometer. This is a small device that you wear on your waistband that measures the number of steps you take throughout your day. Just the fact that you are wearing one makes you more conscious of the idea of walking more - and so you do! Each night write down the number of steps you took and try to beat that number the next day.

3.) Exercise at your desk. If you spend a lot of time at a desk, take frequent stretch breaks. Stand up and stretch if you can. If you can't then try twisting from the waist, reaching your hands up as high as you can, pulling your shoulders back and turning your head from side to side.

4.) Weight lifting. Weight lifting is an indoor sport most of the time so it's perfect for winter. If you are using light 3-5 pound hand weights you are good to go - but for the heavy stuff be sure you have a spotter nearby in case you try to lift more than you should.

5.) Dance classes. Dancing is a wonderful, fun way to keep fit. Whether you choose an exotic dance such as Middle Eastern belly dancing -- or traditional ballroom dancing -- you will be exercising to music -- whether you know it or not!

6.) Speaking of exercising to music - don't forget exercise videos. You can do these right at home so you have no excuse that the weather is too cold to go to the gym or the mall! Get more than one so you can vary the routine. Just getting started exercising? Try Richard Simmons, "Sweatin' to the Oldies" .You may also find exercise shows on television.

7.) Martial Arts. Take a class in judo or karate or any other of the martial arts and you can learn self defense and exercise at the same time. Classes can be found in traditional dojos but also at libraries, community centers and even some churches!

8.) Hit the pool! Swimming pool that is. Many communities have indoor pool facilities available and those that don't may have a fitness center with one. At some gyms you can pay by the day without buying a membership. There are often exercise classes done in the water or you can do laps, the choice is yours!

9.) Dig out the old exercise equipment. Many of us have an exercise bike or treadmill hiding in a back room or garage. Get it out and get on it! Don't have one? Check local used sporting good stores if you want a bargain.

10.) Yoga. Yoga requires almost no special equipment. Just a mat or folded blanket and some comfortable clothing. You can do yoga through television classes, videos or take a live class. You will become more limber and more relaxed and exercise at the same time.

So exercise in the winter -- your summer clothes will thank you for it!
