10. Casino Worker
Gaming has been a major source of income for many years, and with the downward economy, States have been looking in to cashing in on this well oiled trend. In 2007, Michigan passed a state law allowing casino's to be operated and this past year the state of Ohio wielded their power at the ballots to create several casinos though out the state.
In general, casino can do a bevy of things from controlling and leading games, dishing out winnings and calculating losses. Before you get knee deep in, you will have to be granted a gaming license, but for the most part, without any specific secondary education, casino jobs are open to anyone over the age of 20 years, sans a criminal record.
9. Psychologist
Though you will have to sell your arm and leg to get educated for this position, psychologists have seen a steady 19% increase in the job rate. (Does that mean that we are getting crazier?). Though you will be without a few of your extremities once you obtain your degree to practice, at least you have a chance to at least make $76,000 per year starting out. That is something that you shouldn't lay down about.
8. Military
Although the U.S. has seen its share of war, the battle that we have been waging against insurgents in Afghanistan due to the attack on our homeland on September 11, 2001 has taken a toll on our military and has also bolstered its numbers and added additional opportunity for officers (commissioned and non-commissioned) to rise through the ranks. Early in 2008, 12,000 troops were sent to the arena only to be followed with 17,000 just a few months later. President Obama recently announced the addition of close to 30,000 troops to the area, so if you are feeling patriotic, this should be the place for you to be.
7. Fitness Industry
It's no secret that we American's weigh in tops on the scale. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least one third of adults are bellying upwards to gross obesity, while 17% of our children are well on their way to following in our gigantic footsteps. This may be why IRHSA (the international organization of the health club industry) has been making a push to get close to 50 million new members into their affiliated fitness facilities. This coupled with the fact that there is a wide array of fitness related positions reserves spot for this type of jobs on the list.
6. Physician Assistant
There has been major talk over the past few months about health care reform in this country and doctors and health insurance companies and shaking in their boots. With the Senate's passage of the health Bill on Christmas Eve of 2009, health care reform became that much closer to becoming a reality. With an industry shake up as large as this, there is bound to be opportunity. If you have not already invested eight years of your life and have received a medical degree, you may want to look into assisting the doctor instead of becoming one. This, in addition to an aging population, has helped this position to rise close to 50% in its popularity. With a median salary beginning at close to $70,000 per year, you may not be a real doctor, but you will know enough to play one of TV.
5. Medical Records Technician
Ditto about the health care reform and aging population goes for this position. Due to the fact that your duties are not as general (you only maintain medical records) and your school is much less intensive, your average pay will be half that of a physician's assistant. Not too shabby for just having an associate's degree.
4. Database administrators
Information has become an integral part of our society. With the "dot com" boom of the early 1990's and the closing of the "Digital Divide", information technology has become very important to the success of any large and small business. Well, they are going to need someone to keep all of that information searchable and under control. With a projected growth rate of 29% annually until 2016, responsibilities of this position entail design, maintenance, implementation and repair of said databases. Starting out at about 65 grand a year, being the local geek on the street does not look too shabby now does it?
3. Computer Systems Analyst
Take a few sentences from the aforementioned job category and you will have the reason why this job is also on high point in the upcoming year. Instead of fiddling around with information, this position deals with hardware infrastructure, connecting great minds and computer networks alike. The knowledge which is required to hold down this position is reflected in the $75,000 which you will take home on average per year.
2. Environmental Engineer
Al Gore scared the whole world senseless with his movie "An Inconvenient Truth" back in 2006. Though it was almost a half of a decade since the release of the film, the residual effect is still being felt through out the world. The outcroppings of wind farms coupled with the abundance of Green certified technologies is a testament. O keep up with this trend, there is going to be a need for qualified engineers to implement this type of technology.
1. Computer Software Engineer
Information technology is the number one aspect of the millennium that has integrated into most every part of our lives. Whether you are in Smallville, USA or The Big Apple, you can not walk down the street and not bee inundated with some type of new software. Just take a look of the number of applications that the iPhone has come up with or the number of times that you have used a Microsoft Word application in the past few weeks. With an estimated growth rate of 48% in the upcoming year and an average starting point at close to a quarter of a million bucks per year, this is definitely tops for 2010.
