Top 10 List of Most Misplaced Items

J. Ellen Fedder
Are you in the habit of misplacing things? Have you ever found a misplaced item in the refrigerator that didn't belong there? I have. Once, I found the pepper shaker in there. Sadly, I've also found things that belonged in the refrigerator, in the cupboard. Of course, those things ended up in trash, and I kicked myself for the waste of good food and money. But there are several items most of us misplace routinely, a few of them on a weekly basis. Here is the top 10 list of most misplaced items.

1: Car Keys

Who hasn't misplaced car keys? Unless you make a conscious effort to place them where you know you'll find them, they could end up under the newspaper or down in the couch. Talk about a miserable time trying to unearth them! You end up bringing in the troops to help locate those very essential car keys.

2. Purse or Wallet

What woman hasn't misplaced her purse, even in her own home? I personally have at least 5 places that my purse can end up inside my home and at least three places in the car. Definitely, a woman's purse is an often misplaced item. I'm guessing that guys have the same problem when they empty out their pockets and toss a wallet someplace.

3. Car in a Parking Lot

Yes, I'll admit it. I've lost my car in a parking lot before. But don't laugh--most of us have done it at least one, especially in a mall parking lot, at a theme park, or at a grassy lot that isn't well marked.

4. Coats and Gloves

Coats and gloves are most often misplaced when we leave them behind on an outing. We wear them to a destination, and somewhere between the place we visit and home, the gloves are misplaced. Often, it's because we fail to remember we even wore a coat or gloves that day.

5. Shoes

Every family searches for shoes, particularly if there are kids at home. The problem with shoes is there are two for every set. If you find one shoe, you're still out of luck until you find the other one.

6. Checkbook

It's easy to misplace a checkbook (or ATM card). We become anxious until it's found, because it ties up our ability to purchase and risks someone else finding it first.

7. Cell Phone

A cell phone is small and easy to misplace. Not only can we misplace one on our own, but it can fall out of a pocket without us even knowing it. Cell phones have a way of turning up missing every so often, and they are best found when someone calls.

8. Telephone Number or E-mail Address

A scrap of paper with a few numbers or words on it is so easy to misplace. Don't you dislike having to ask someone for the same information again, because you misplaced the original?

9. Glasses

Reading glasses, distance glasses, sunglasses, contacts--we have so many glasses to misplace, and we do.

10. Remote

It's not the end of the world when the remote gets misplaced, but you'd think so in some homes. The channel can always be changed at the set; however, that would require getting up and doing it manually. Knowing where the remote is makes family life run more smoothly.

If you've not misplaced anything for a while, count yourself fortunate. You're still on top of your game. Meanwhile, do have patience for the rest of us who misplace not only these top 10 items, but more.

I have often misplaced my keys and glasses only to find the glasses perched on top of my head and keys in my hand even as I was rummaging through the purse looking for them, or checking under sofa cushions. Yes I misplace the car or could not remember where I parked, because I swore I parked it "over here" and it was gone. I have left wallets sitting at checkout stands ~ lucky, money was only stolen once and they did not take ATM card. I have also found my lost keys sitting in the car ignition, sometimes with the door unlocked, other times with window wide open, sort of an advertisement: hey come steal me.

My glasses would have been at the top of my list. Maybe because I only use them for reading. I'm afraid I'm guilty of misplacing most of the others on your list, too.
