Top 10 List of New Year's Resolutions Couples Should Make

Using New Year's Resolutions to Improve Your Relationship

Sally Albright
A happy relationship takes many things to make it work. If you find that your relationship can use a little help, then you can use New Year's resolutions to improve your relationship with your significant other. Here is my top 10 list of New Year's resolutions couples can make that will benefit their relationship.

New Year's Resolution #10: Exercise Together

One of the most common New Year's resolutions people make each year is to exercise more. Sometimes it can be difficult to get motivated when trying to exercise alone. Exercising together as a couple can make getting more exercise fun. It can also help each of you stick to the goal by motivating each other. By exercising together you and your partner can truly have a "healthy" relationship.

New Year's Resolution #9: Cook Together

Spending time together should be at the top of every couple's list of things to do. This New Year's resolution involves spending time together creating meals. Cooking dinner together is a great way to spend time together. Cooking together also allows for you and your significant other to become reconnected after a long day. Cooking together can also teach you and your partner how to work together as a team as well as creating a wonderful bonding experience.

New Year's Resolution #8: Play Games Together

This New Year's resolution is a fun one to fulfill. Relationships don't have to be all work and no play. Take the time to have some fun with your partner by playing games together. During the summer you can go to the park and throw a Frisbee or football around. In the colder winter months you can stay indoors and play card games or board games together. You can even invite other couples over for team game play.

New Year's Resolution #7: The Little Things

You don't always need to make a grand gesture to show someone you love them. Sometimes it's the littlest of things that really matter. Something as simple as setting the coffee machine to brew in the morning or opening the car door for your partner can really show how much you care. Make a New Year's resolution with your loved one to try and do more of the little things for each other.

New Year's Resolution #6: Get Romantic

What does romance mean to you? Make one of your couple's New Year's resolutions to fill the romantic wishes of your partner. Make a special effort several times throughout the year to surprise your partner with romantic gestures. The types of romantic gestures you do really depends on what your partner considers to be romantic, whether it be bouquets of flowers or cuddling together and watching a football game on TV.

New Year's Resolution #5: Listening

This one is an important one. This New Year's resolution requires nothing more than listening to your partner. I don't mean the Yes Dears accompanied with a smile and nodding. Truly listen. Keep in mind that your partner isn't always in search for answers and may not want to receive advice, they just want your ears all to themselves.

New Year's Resolution #4: Fewer Arguments

All couples argue, or so they say. Make a New Year's resolution to argue less. Arguing with each other is a waste of time. Granted that there may be times where an argument seems unavoidable, but there are many times when arguments are. Pick your battles wisely. Most importantly, learn to compromise.

New Year's Resolution #3: Compliments

Boost your partner's self esteem by creating a New Year's resolution to dish out more compliments. Compliments can be something as general as, "You look great!" Or it can be more specific, like "The color of that shirt really brings out the beautiful blues of your eyes. It's breath taking." Taking the time to compliment your significant other shows them that you do still love them, you appreciate them, and you still find them attractive. Surprise your loved one with compliments during appropriate times such as dressing up for a dinner out, a job well done, or the way he handled your child's misbehavior.

New Year's Resolution #2: Dates

This New Year's resolution deals with dating. And no I don't mean cheating on your significant other, I mean taking them out on dates. A little alone time with your partner can be all that you need to feel reconnected with them. This means time with no TV, no deadlines, and no stress. Just quality time spent with your significant other. Date nights can be spent at home having a romantic candle light dinner or going out dancing. Having a special date night at the end of the week can give you and your loved one something to look forward to.

New Year's Resolution #1: Saying I Love You

The number one New Year's resolution for Couples is an easy one. Say I Love You. Say it often, say it with meaning. A simple I Love You can melt someone's heart. A simple I Love You can be the perfect ending to an argument. Saying I Love You is also a perfect way of saying Good Morning and Good Night. You simply can't say these words enough to each other.

Using one, two, three, or all ten of these New Year's resolutions can make the New Year an even sweeter one for you and your partner. So why not include them on your couple's list of New Year's resolutions to make for the upcoming New Year?

I strongly believe that couples need to make time for each other, even if penciled in on a calender. It can be so easy to lose touch in our busy world. Good article!
