Pam Gaulin
Here are the top 10 Madonna songsthat can easily be incorporated into your next yoga work out or yoga class. Not all yoga needs to be practiced with New Age, traditional meditation or instrumental only music. Contemporary music is being used in yoga in gyms around the world. You can add that contemporary flair to your own yoga play list for youriPod . Or, mix some of these Madonna songs in with more traditional yoga music for a very eclectic work out for yourself or for a yoga class.

Top 10 Madonna Songs for a Yoga Workout

"Sky Fits Heaven"

The Madonna song "Sky Fits Heaven" is an ideal song to start off a yoga practice with a contemporary twist. "Sky Fits Heaven" has some energy to it, and is a good standing warm up song. Combine the Mountain pose with the Upward Salute. From the Heaven and Earth Pose go into a lotus, with your bottom on your heels. Once warmed up you will be able to move into the Sun Salutation poses.

"Sky Fits Heaven" is from Madonna's Ray of Light album.

"Shanti/Ashtangi"

The most obvious Madonna song for a yoga work out is "Shanti/Ashtangi" from 1998's Ray of Light. The song from the albums is four minutes and 59 seconds long. It could be used during the yogic Sun Salutation, when the Sun Salutation is repeated and done at a moderate pace.

"Shanti/Ashtangi" by Madonna can also be used to encourage core work, in the middle of a yoga work out. Use it for a good yoga sit-up session. Or you could alternate some yoga sit ups with the butterfly pose, which is a fluttering pose that works the inner thighs. Who couldn't us a couple minutes of inner thigh stretching?

"Take a Bow"

"Take a Bow" from Madonna's Ray of Light is a great final song for meditation, or to proceed meditation in the final overall body stretching portion of the yoga work out. Take a Bow runs for a solid five minutes and 21 seconds, so you won't be rushing those final stretches.

This Madonna song is also slow and soft enough to be used during any balance poses including the tree pose.

"Justify My Love"

"Justify My Love" is a Madonna song that works for alternating between the cat pose and the dog pose. Both are table positions. This yoga combination will stretch the back. Be sure to lean all the way back and drop into child's pose if you need to rest. Also incorporate the child's pose towards the end of the song.

"Frozen"

"Frozen" is a Madonna song that can accommodate back bending poses. It can be used for a nice sequence of cobra poses, counter-posed with the child's pose. Frozen is yet another great Madonna song for yoga that is from the Ray of Light album.

"Sanctuary"

"Sanctuary" is from Madonna's Bedtimes Stories (1994).

Sanctuary is a slow moving and peaceful song which could be easily used for any warm up poses or gentle movements. Because of its slow and unchanging rhythm, this Madonna song is also ideal for sitting twist poses. Sitting twist poses need to be done very gently, and without any force. Remember to compensate the body with a back stretch pose after twisting.

"Sanctuary" by Madonna is five minutes and three seconds long, which should be enough time for a gentle sitting twist. If you enjoy staying in a yogic twist pose, use another song for the back stretch to follow this one.

"Secret"

"Secret" from Bedtimes Stories (1994) is a powerful song that can be used for various standing strength poses. Use it for a Warrior Pose or to move through the poses to get you into the extended side angle pose.

"Ray of Light"

Let's not forget about the power yoga practitioners. If you need a vigorous song to get your heart pumping, or to encourage a fast sequence of back-to-back sun salutations, Ray of Light is the Madonna song for your yoga practice.

"Hung Up"

Another Madonna song which could be used in yoga dance is "Hung Up." It is lively and will get you moving.

"The Power of Goodbye"

"The Power of Goodbye" by Madonna, from Ray of Light is a great yoga song for doing the down facing dog pose. Follow the down facing dog with a plank pose and then go into a relaxing child pose.
