Top 10 MLB Active Home Run Leaders

Here is a list of the top 10 active home run hitters. Many players have hit a Major League Baseball home run, but only a few can boast numbers like the top 10. Steroids have begun to cast a shadow over some of the players on the list but one cannot argue with the consistency they have showed throughout their career. The top 10 was decided by career home runs and only active players were eligible.

1. Ken Griffey Jr. - "Junior" began his MLB career in 1989. Twenty Years later Griffey has stood at home plate 9,316 times. After all those at bats Griffey sits first on the active list with 611 home runs.

2. Alex Rodriguez- Rodriguez hasn't had nearly as many at bats as Griffey and sits right behind him on the active list. Rodriguez is the best paid athlete in career earnings and is on his way to the Hall of Fame. Rodriguez has 553 home runs in 7,860 at bats.

3. Jim Thome- Thome comes in 3^rd on the list and has been in the league since 1991. Thome is 12 home runs behind Rodriguez and has fewer at bats. Thome has 541 career home runs.

4. Manny Ramirez- Ramirez is chasing Thome and Rodriguez and has been in the league since 1993. Ramirez has 7,610 at bats and has a chance to catch the pack with 527 career home runs.

5. Frank Thomas- Thomas has 521 career home runs and began his career in 1990. Nineteen years later, Thomas is being mentioned as a possible Hall of Fame candidate. Thomas has 8199 career at bats and should be hanging up his cleats soon.

6. Gary Sheffield- Sheffield ended last season just short of his 500^th career home run. Sheffield has 8943 career at bats since entering the league in 1988. Sheffield has had a great career but may be hurting his case with the way he moves his mouth.

7. Carlos Delgado- Delgado may not be in his prime but is still putting up good numbers. After joining the league in 1993, Delgado has been to the plate 7,189 times and has 469 career home runs.

8. Mike Piazza- Piazza is being mentioned as one of the best catchers of all time. With that in mind Piazza should be looking at a Hall of Fame induction with the numbers he has put up. Piazza joined Major League Baseball in 1992 and has 427 home runs in 6911 at bats.

9. Chipper Jones- Jones has never really had a monster year hitting home runs and has shown consistency pays. Jones began his Major League Baseball career in 1993 and has been to the plate 7337 times. Jones has 408 home runs during his career and has been solid.

10. Jason Giambi- Giambi remains a dominating factor in Major League Baseball. Giambi has the least plate appearances of anyone in the top 10. Giambi should rise on the list due to his career longevity compared to the other players Giambi already has 396 home runs and began his Major League Baseball career in 1995.
