Top 10 Most Entertaining and Scary Horror Movies of All Time

Anthony Cox
Looking for some great horror movies to watch this Halloween but you're tired of all the same old mainstream movies you've seen over and over? Here's my list of the top 10 most entertaining to watch horror movies of all time, followed by a short description of each. It's no coincidence most of these were from the 1980's as that was to me the best time period ever for horror movies, there were so many great films made in those 10 years. And just when I think I've watched all of them I find something new, or one is released on DVD for the first time.

I guess I am biased because I grew up in the 80's and have fond memories of a lot of these, but I think most of them still stand the test of time. Enjoy and don't forget the popcorn!

1. Return of the Living Dead (1985) this is what horror / comedy should be, my favorite horror film of all time and I've watched a lot believe me.

2. From Beyond (1986) Based on an H.P Lovecraft story, a mad scientist strange experiments and beautiful women, it doesn't get much better than this. Great F/X and 80s style latex and makeup creatures.

3. Hellraiser (1987) The one that started it all and really worth watching again if you haven't seen it in a while. There's really a great story here, better than most horror movies.

4. Phantasm (1979) Another classic that spawned a series of lesser sequels. The tall man and those flying silver balls still give me the creeps.

5. The Re Animator (1985) A scientist discovers a way to re-animate dead flesh and soon becomes bored with using dead cats as guinea pigs and enlists the help of his roommate.

6. Evil Dead (1983) This was one of those low budget films that has become a mega cult classic. Long after Blair Witch is forgotten this one will still be around. A creepy cabin in the woods holds the secret to unleashing the living dead!

7. Friday the 13th (1980) This one needs no introduction and another that you should see again if it's been a while.

8. House (1986 ) Freaky special effects and some really cleaver ideas were used in this movie. A man inherits an old house and soon discovers it has a mind of its own.

9. 976-evil (1989 ) Director Robert "Freddy Krueger" England gives us this often forgotten classic from the 80's. A young boy enlists the help of a 976 psychic whose predictions have an eerie habit of coming true.

10. Scanners (1981 ) The best David Cronenberg movie ever in my opinion. Evil signals are being transmitted over satellite television, lots of gore and great special effects!
