Top 10 Most Pointless Undergraduate College Degrees

Nick Mayer
If you are planning on declaring your major soon, make sure that the one you choose isn't pointless. If you choose a useless degree, you might as well not even go to college because you will be investing a lot of money into your useless degree and you will not get a good return on the investment. Choosing a degree is one of the more important decisions one can make, so with that said, here are the most pointless and useless degrees you can get in college.

10. Surfing Studies - Unless you become a professional surfer, this degree is so pointless it isn't even funny. This is the ultimate partying degree that serves no purpose and is completely useless. If you decide to settle on this major at Plymouth University, you might as well start applying for jobs at McDonald's now because this is easily one of the most pointless and useless degrees.

9. Engineering - Okay just kidding on this one, this is probably the more valuable degrees you can get instead of one of these other more useless degrees that are pointless. Engineering is by far one of the more financially and vocationally useful degrees and also allows you to get a degree that can be applied to real life.

8. Woman's Studies - What can be accomplished with this degree? Pretty much nothing. It is more of a female empowering class than anything else. This degree is simply useless. What kind of job can you get with this degree I ask? None! Learning about the empowerment of women and getting a degree in it is not only useless and pointless, it sets women back years!

7. David Beckham Studies - Now even though this is only offered in the UK, it still has to be listed under one of the most pointless degrees ever. David Beckham is a soccer player, not a god. And even if he was, then he would be considered under a mythology degree, and that is a pretty useless degree as well.

6. Art History - If you enjoy creating art, paintings, sculptures, etc. this might be the major for you. Though it does serve a purpose, it still does not have any future in the job market, rendering it useless for this list. If there is no possibility to get a decent job after college then why even consider getting a useless degree in it?

5. Communications - Here is another ultimate partying degree. Many friends of mine have had aspirations of becoming doctors, engineers, and other prestigious degrees, just to realize that they party too much and settle for a communications degree because it is so much easier. This does not make any sense to be and that is why communications is a pointless and useless degree.

4. Philosophy - Though this can be a very enlightening degree, like many other degrees out there it is still useless in the job market. With that being said, I think philosophy is very interesting, but there really is nothing that you can do with this degree unless you want to teach philosophy, so this degree will be considered to be very useless and one of the most pointless degrees.

3. English - Many friends of mine have also wanted to become much more than an English major, but then realized that they cannot work hard enough for it, so they switched to an English major. This is sad because an English degree is very pointless. There is nothing that English majors know that cannot be looked up in a book somewhere.

2. Religion - Religion degrees have to be some of the most pointless degrees out there. There is no knowledge that comes from this degree than can be transferred into the workforce. All of it is information on things that might not have actually happened and how people practice religions. This degree is interesting, but is still pointless and useless when it comes to getting a job in the real world.

1. Latin - Congratulations Latin majors, you just spent 4 years of your life learning a language that nobody speaks anymore. This is such a pointless degree because everything that has been said or written in Latin has already been translated, meaning that your fluency in Latin has gone to waste as you cannot translate anything for anybody. That is why Latin degrees are by far the most pointless and useless degrees that one can get in a four year university.

Women's studies, (not "woman's studies" as you typed) has relevance in our society and would be useful for a number of specific roles. I wouldn't choose to study it myself, but your argument is yet again flawed and mis-informed. Lisa, who has commented here, clearly has no idea about what feminism actually is, or how much better her life is as a result of it. Shame on you.

As a British person, I would also like to confirm that "David Beckham studies" does not exist as a degree over here and never has. It's all just another bunch of crap the media used to get people like you in a frenzy about how terribly pointless higher education is these days.

Try getting an education before you comment on that of others. If you already have one then I would ask for my money back if I were you.

This is the top one most pointless article I have ever read.

I can tell that the person who wrote this article did not major in English due to his or her lack of research. How can a degree in English be useless? Who do you think writes those complex instruction manuals that come with your brand new PC? Who do you think drafts those corporate policies that companies need in order to ensure the growth of their profits? Who designs and drafts web contents for blogs and other websites? Many of them are English majors.

That explains sooooooooo much about the readability of these documents.

"Learning about the empowerment of women and getting a degree in it is not only useless and pointless, it sets women back years!"

This is the smartest thing I've ever read about women's studies. Feminism is so backwards. Self-indulgent diatribes are supposed to prove how valuable your gender is? Yeah right. Why don't you try actually contributing something to society. Start a business, invent something, design something, or start a family.

Art History can help you get a job as a curator and a number of people who go to law school have philosophy (moral values),classics (Latin law terms) or English (analysis) as their undergrad. In addition to that, their are many jobs (i.e. pharmaceutical sales) that do not seem to care too much what their employees majored in, as long as they got their undergrad degree. Of course most of these things can be studied on one's own time, but what use would there be for college?

No matter how good your technical skills are, if you cannot write and communicate your ideas, you're about as useful as Dean Cook is to American comedy.

I must say that Latin is an important language and in the long run much more useful. The fact that the American language is all derivitives of the Latin language should be enough. French, Italian, Spanish, etc. They are all romance languages which mean that once you learn Latin you can better understand those languages. So when you say no one speaks Latin anymore, well your wrong.

David Beckham Studies is not a degree in the UK. It was offered as one 12 week module course at Staffordshire University on the sociological importance of football.

  • Nick Mayer2/1/2010

Disagree. What can you possibly do with Latin? It simply says that you can interpret a now dead language. There is no part in that major that is employable. English is a degree that is also not very employable unless you do not mind being a teacher. Sure, you can do many things with English, but I could easily study something else in college and then learn the same skills needed to write outside of college. Philosophy is the same way. There is nothing that tells an employer to hire you from that, other than the fact that you can think at a higher level. None of those show any competency in a real-world job.

You have totally the wrong idea about degrees. I can't believe you're listing English, Philosophy and Latin (and I presume from that Classics in general) alongside David Beckham studies! Degrees are NOT about getting a specific job- Philosophy, Classics and English are about showing you know how to learn, think, analyse, interpret etc etc etc. They're actually highly sought after by employers as graduates of these subjects will be highly adaptable, and they're among the most respected degrees. I agree that there are huge numbers of pointless degrees out there, but these long-standing, respected and valuable degrees should not be counted among them. Rant over.
