Buying a dog is an important decision and one that should not be made on a whim. Before you decide on a dog, you should do some research on which breeds are known for which traits and the potential problems that may come up with certain breeds of dogs. Once you have researched dog breeds, you can make a decision about which breed would be best for you and your surroundings without worrying about anything. Certain dog breeds are much more popular than others. One of these top ten most popular dog breeds may be the breed for you. Here is a list of the top ten most popular dog breeds, numbers six through ten, in the United States as of 2007.

6. Boxer
Boxers are great family dogs. They are said to be incredibly friendly and kind to the members of their family, but not exactly opened to strangers. They are rather large dogs weighing anywhere from 50 to 75 pounds. They are very easy to train, which is play a part in their spot on the list of the most popular dog breeds. Boxers are very bright, but they need a lot of attention or they can resort to destructive behavior such as digging.

7. Dachshund
Many people don't know what someone is referring to when they say "Dachshund," but you can be sure they recognize "weiner dog." These are very small and long dogs, hence the name. Dachshunds are very playful dogs, which makes them great for children, as well as their being small. They can often be difficult to train because they are known to be stubborn, but once they are trained they are very obedient.

8. Poodle
There are many different categories when it comes to poodles. Some are large while some are small, and they can be a variety of colors. These dogs are known for being good with children as well as being great watch dogs. They are not an aggressive dog breed, but they do need daily exercise and will find a way to entertain themselves if they are not getting enough exercise.

9. ShihTzu
ShihTzus are the ninth most popular breed of dog in the United States and it could have something to do with their being extremely cute. They are great lap dogs, and don't need as much exercise as larger dogs because they are very small. ShihTzus are known to be very friendly and sweet dogs, but are not as well known for their intelligence.

10. Bulldog
There are many different types of Bulldogs, but the breed in general is the last of the top ten most popular dog breeds. The average weight of a bulldog is around 50 pounds, but it can vary. They are very even tempered dogs. Bulldogs absolutely need exercise on a regular basis, if they are neglected, they will likely develop problems with their heart or lungs, or both.
