Thor
With the box office success of such Marvel superheroes as Spiderman, Iron Man and Wolverine, it was only a matter of time until the Norse god Thor made his way onto the silver screen. With Australian actor Chris Hemsworth (George Kirk in the Star Trek (2009) in the lead role, and a supporting cast that includes veteran actress Natalie Portman (Jane Foster) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), The Mighty Thor is schedule to hit movie theaters in May of 2011.
Green Lantern
Not to be out done by Marvel superheroes, DC Comics will enter the 2011 box office battles with the release of Green Lantern by Warner Brothers. The movie, currently in production, will star Ryan Reynolds in the lead role of Hal Jordan (Green Lantern) and Blake Lively as Carol Ferris.
The Hobbit: Part 1
Hoping to cash in on the prior success of the Lord of Rings trilogy, hobbits will be back in vogue in 2011 with the scheduled December released of the The Hobbit. Rumored to be part of the cast are Ian McKellen as Gandorf, Ron Perlman (Hellboy) as Thorin, and Cate Blanchette as Galadriel. The screenplay will be penned by Peter Jackson who directed the Lord of the Ring trilogy.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On the Strangers Tide
Johnny Depp will be back to reprise the role of Jack Sparrow in this the fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. However, the movie will be without actress Kierra Knightly and actor Orlando Bloom, both of who expressed a desired to take their career in a different direction. The film, directed by Rob Marshall will be based on the pirate novel, "On Stranger Tides" by award-winning writer Tim Powers.
Ghostbuster III
Back to reprise the Ghostbuster roles that they made famous in the 1980's are actors Bill Murray (Dr. Peter Venkman), Harold Ramis (Dr. Egon Spengler) and Dan Akroyd (Dr. Ray Stantz). Also rumored to be part of the cast are actresses Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts. Weaver who has not officially signed on yet, said she is looking forward to reading the script.
Battle Angel
James Cameron, of Titanic, Avatar, Dark Angel and Terminator fame, takes another crack at movie in which cyborgs play a major role, with the 2011 release of Battle Angel. The movie based on the Japanese magna by the same name, takes place in the 26th century and centers around Alita a cyborg bounty hunter.
X-men: First Class
Not to be left out of the superhero genre, X-men: First Class is due to be released in the summer of 2011. The movie which focuses on the relationship between a young Charles Xaiver and young Magneto will be directed by Bryan Singer (director on X-Men 2), and should re-invigorate if not re-invent the winning X-men franchise.
Battleship
In the mode of Independence Day, War of the Worlds and perhaps the Day the Earth Stood Still, 2011 will see the release of yet one more blockbuster movie centered around an Alien invasion. The movie, which will be directed by Peter Berg, will have a fleet of ships battle an alien armada bent on wrecking havoc on earth.
Mad Max 4: Fury Road
Mad Max, the franchise that help launch the career of Hollywood superstar Mel Gibson, will be back in 2011with the franchise's fourth offering, Fury Road. The movie which will be shot in Australia and which carries a budget in excess of $100 million will be directed by George Miller who directed the first three Mad Max movies. Though the plot has not been settled on, it is rumored that Miller hopes to cast Charlize Theron as the female lead.
Hancock 2
The summer of 2011 will see the return of Will Smith to the role of the superhero Hancock. This movie will be based on relationship between Smith's character and his soul mate Mary Embry originally played by Charlize Theron. Though the latest word is that Theron is not on board with the project as of yet.
