Top 10 Movies Starting with the Letter "C"

Wes Laurie
In cultivating my top 10 list of movies that begin with the letter C, it took some time to convince myself which ones exactly deserved most recognition in my personal experience. Half of the films were shoo-ins for me, but the others took contemplation. Some examples of runners up not on the list: Casino, which in retrospect comes off as an overproduced star-studded documentary with all the narration. Cinderella Man, I eventually decided against because the portrayal of the villain was too evil when compared to the real man. Children of Men was very cool looking, but nothing too excitingly new once the ending came around. Charlotte's Web played a role in my childhood, but further versions of the film and renditions have buried the positive feel I used to get from the existence of the story. Finally, Cider House Rules barely missed its way on to the list and with so many great films starting with the letter C you may find yourself crying "foul" with some of my odd choices for the top 10.

10. Candy - Released on DVD in Mach of 2007, this Heath Ledger starring film struck a cord with me. It is one of the darkest most depression romances with heroin ever. It isn't going to be often that a straight to DVD film sticks hard in ones memory, but Candy fit perfectly with my love of dramatic romances and tragic tales. Ever so dark and poetically sweet with the tagline: "More is Never Enough."

9. Crash - The version I speak of is the Oscar winner for Best Picture and not the NC-17 James Spader film about people having sex during car crashes. This film tackling a racism and stereotyping plot was well told through the ensemble cast , which is one of my favorite types of story telling in film.

8. Critters - The 1986 horror film about space alien hairballs with insatiable appetites. When I was younger this was one of the only "scary" movies I could get myself to watch. And watch it I did, over and over again. Critters is loads of fun.

7. Cruel Intentions - I think I mentioned I am a sucker for intense drama and overdone tragedy. Cruel Intentions, the 1999 slicked up version with Sarah Michelle Gellar, was done on a level to appeal to young adult audiences, and I fell into the trap and ate it right up too.

6. Cape Fear - Robert De Niro defined what it was to be a serious villain in this movie. The 1991 remake had stellar, brutal performances from De Niro and Nick Nolte which will always stand out in my mind.

5. Capote - The film is too slow for many, but I find the depth of the characters to be quite a draw. Both the prisoners and Capote were well captured in the acting performances and the slow pace added a bit of richness to the atmosphere that felt needed. Capote made a sort of anti-protagonist-protagonist which was very interesting.

4. Copland - Hands down the best Sylvestor Stallone movie ever. Sly packed on the pounds to play the sheriff of Copland and the supporting cast was a who's, who of great actors. Stunning drama with just the right amount of bullets made this film an immediate favorite of mine.

3. Carlito's Way- Al Pacino and Brian De Palma teamed up again after Scarface to make this more romantic gangster tale. Carlito's Way went for the jugular of emotion in all the right spots and reached almost as grand a scale as Scarface. Al Pacino's acting controlled the entertainment fully and I was fully entertained.

2. Chasing Amy- This wordy Kevin Smith film about a man pursuing a woman with a more sordid sexual history than himself worked for me even with Ben Affleck's less than great acting skills. The movie brings up questions of self worth that have in the past actually affected relationships with girls who watched the film with me and then got to contemplating too deeply. The fact that a film can get anyone to think deep when it is a foul mouthed comedy is an outstanding feat.

1. The Crow - One of my favorites if not my favorite movie of all time. Forgetting the tragedy surrounding the making of the film and Brandon Lee's death the sheer emotion captured from the comic characters in this tragic story of love and revenge was astounding. I could watch this movie over and over again and never get bored. The sequels were poor , formulaic replays, but the first in the series was one of the greatest movies ever for me

Cape Fear I like the original slightly better. Critters is fun. Copland was a bit slow, The Crow's awesome. Carlito's Way is terrific, like Scarface in reverse.
