Top 10 Notorious Celebrity Hairstyles

Ranked, for Your Viewing Pleasure, of Course

Alex P
We all knew these celebrities at their prime. But, it's been several decades since the height of their fame for some of them! And when we reminisce, what stands out the most? Their hairstyles, of course. Here's the top ten most notorious celebrity hairstyles in American history:

10. Whoopi Goldberg
The second African American woman to win an Academy Award for her role in "Ghost", a popular Goldberg plunged into several careers, including singing, acting, talk show hosting, and performing comedy. Additionally, Goldberg credits herself for creating the "low-maintenance" style for women, saying that "Today when I see dreads, braids, plum lipstick and women wearing flats and sneakers, I know part of that is because of me." She popularized the thick dreads that defined the "Whoopi Goldberg look," and remains one of few celebrities who continues to wear this unique hair style. For this, she starts the list off at #10.

9. Ben Wallace
The true king of the afro, Ben Wallace became famous through his impeccable basketball career with the Detroit Pistons. From 2001 to 2003, Wallace won several awards like NBA leader in blocks, offensive rebounds, and defensive rebounds. During most of his away games, he keeps hair in cornrows (because of hecklers), but he earnestly satisfies his fans during home games by sporting his afro. His consistent use of the afro during games, despite its arguable irritation, has earned him a strong fanbase, making him #9 on my list of top ten notorious hairstyles.

8. Mr. T
As a core part of "The A-Team," a popular television show of the 90's, Mr. T. represented the quintessential "tough guy." The combination of his strong build, fierce voice, and abundant gold jewelry made him a man no one dared to mess with. The other defining feature of Mr. T. was his mohawk, which he continued to wear throughout his career, spanning from movies to voice acting to commercial appearances. No other celebrity for the last two decades represented the mohawk as powerfully and enthusiastically as the almighty Mr. T. I pity the foo' who disagrees.

7. Snoop Dogg
Beginning his career with NWA, Snoop Dogg soon became one of two successful apprentices of Dr. Dre, the other being Eminem. Known as a true pimp and the creator of the "shizzle" trend, Snoop Dogg remains one of the most successful artists in the rap industry. Throughout his career, he wore his hair in braids, whether it be in cornrows or pigtails. No other rapper dares compete with the hairstyle of Snoop Dogg, making it #7 on the list of most notorious hairstyles.

6. Pink
Known as the female punk of pop rock, Pink gained prominence after the turn of the century with her energetic performances in songs like "There You Go" and "So What." In supporting her punk appearance, she has always settled for a hairstyle that is anything but normal. When her hairstyle is not in a blond fiery mohawk, it is dyed with a fluorescent or dark pink, depending on her mood. Her ever changing hairstyles symbolize one of the most daring and energetic artists of the twenty-first century.

5. Dennis Rodman
From 1986-2000, Rodman played in the NBA, most known as the dominating rebounder and defender during his time with the Chicago Bulls. After a rethinking a 1993 suicide attempt, Rodman changed his lifestyle from a young introvert to a tattooed, controversial celebrity. I know what you're thinking; he simply had a short haircut with an assortment of artificial colors poured onto it. Yes, that's true, but his colorful hairstyle defined the celebrity who challenged referees for fun and married a Carmen Electra while drunk. No other hairstyle led to such an notorious and controversial lifestyle as Dennis Rodman's, landing him as #5 on the list.

4. Elvis Presley
Elvis. The king of rock and roll. He shook his hips on TV. What more need be said? He represented the notoriously greased back hair trend of the mid to late twentieth century. For that, and only that, he's #4 on the list.

3. Vanilla Ice
This one-hit-wonder surfaced for a couple of years after his 1990 single "Ice Ice Baby." Quickly, however, he fell out of the scope of fame. He attempted a return to rap in 1994 with his album "Mind Blowin," heavily referencing the use of marijuana, but it was not well received by the public. However, if not his legacy of rapping, his hairstyle has a legacy in itself. During his earlier career, Ice wore his "Unicorn-style" hair, which protruded from the top of his head like a Unicorn's horn. The style did not last, but it was so notorious never to be worn again. His boldness to use the shameful Unicorn hairstyle, though, puts him at #3 on the list.

2. Amy Winehouse
Famous for her raspy and contralto voice, Amy Winehouse rose to fame during the first decade of the twentieth century with popular albums like "Frank" and "Back to Black." More recently, many of us know her as the celebrity plagued with issues of drug abuse and legal problems. Often connected with drug arrests, rehab, and the divorce with her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, her name consistently finds itself in the tabloids. Despite all of this, she remains the celebrity who sports the beehive hairstyle that died fifty years earlier. With her bold confidence in maintaining this elaborate hairstyle, she ranks #2 on my list of notorious celebrity hairstyles.

1. Coolio
This 90's rapper became a legend when his hit single, "Gangsta's Paradise," topped the charts in countries like the U.S., Canada, and many others in Europe. Accordingly, his hair was just as popular as arguably one of the most famous songs in hip hop history. He maintained his Medusa-like dreadlocks immaculately, keeping them erect and never allowing them to slump over. Each braid curled over itself and changed directions multiple times before it ended. Even when he wore a hat or bandanna, he continued the hairstyle, cutting a hole on the top of his hats to flaunt his dreads. Never imitated by another celebrity, Coolio's hairstyle is the most notorious hairstyle ever in American history.
