Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) wage war against James McCullen (Christopher Eccleston) in a fight over not-so-inconceivable nano technology capable of destroying all things metal.
The bringing to life of an action figure that America has grown up with is very well done. Easily one of the best films released over the summer.
9. Public Enemies, released July 1, 2009
Set in the Great Depression, agent of the Bureau of Investigation, Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale), must stop a criminal gang led by John Dillinger (Johnny Depp). The criminals always seem to be one step ahead of Purvis, however, and he cannot seem to get a leg up. After fast-paced chases and near-death experiences, Purvis must make a choice.
Johnny Depp plays the role of a villain outstandingly and Christian Bale doesn't do too shabby himself. Hoping to see those two alongside each other in a new upcoming Batman movie as well as they work brilliantly together.
8. Sherlock Holmes, will be released on Christmas Day, 2009.
Revealing both his fighting prowess and dizzling intellect, Holmes (Downey Jr.) and Watson (Law) embark on a suspenseful, action-packed mission, testing Holmes' limits in this hardcore, yet fun-filled, thriller.
Though yet to be released, the Joel Silver re-enactment of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's world-renowned series looks to be a great one. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law look almost too comfortable in their roles.
7. Surrogates, released September 25, 2009
In a world reminiscent of I-Robot, where sin is supposed to no longer exist and people live life from the safety of their home, an unexplainable murder occurs. Agent Tom Greer (Bruce Willis) investigates and finds that murder is the least of his problems.
Bruce Willis plays hardcore Agent Greer to a T. Look for an individual Oscar nomination for him as well as a possible best picture nomination.
6. District 9, released August 14, 2009
After a large alien ship full of "prawns" arrives in JoBurg, South Africa, Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley), strives to keep the peace while the world faces a whole new kind of racism and black market.
District 9 adds a new spin to the alien genre of movie, much better than many films of its likeness.
5. X-Men Origins: Wolverine, released May 1, 2009
James Howlett, or Logan, (Hugh Jackman), after surviving countless wars through more than a century and a half of fighting alongside his brother, Victor (Liev Shreiber), perform a number of tasks with Team X, a group formed of different people with extraordinary abilities. After they leave the group, the members begin to die off. Logan undergoes an extensive surgery to strengthen his body as well as enhance his ability. After enlisting the help of Gambit, Logan must stop the activation of the newly christened Weapon XI before it is too late.
Hugh Jackman's reprisal of his role as Wolverine does not disappoint. The movie dives deeper into the character that many believe is the face of the X-Men and does so with gusto.
4. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, released June 24, 2009
Off to college, Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) and Mikaela Banes (Megan Fox) think their lives just might be returning to normal. After discovering a shard of the AllSpark in his clothes, a map is imprinted on Sam's mind and his life is again changed forever. With the help of Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen) and the rest of the AutoBots, they must stop the Decepticons from destroying the world as we know it.
Arguably just as good as the first, Transformers 2 comes back full-force, smacking us in the face with an action-packed thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Oscar-worthy?? Most definitely.
3. Inglorious Basterds, released August 21, 2009
Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) and his band of "basterds" are a special unit of the Allied forces in WWII. Aldo describes their job succinctly as "killin' Nazis" and those that they do leave alive, Aldo carves a swastika into their heads so they will be able to be identified as Nazis after the war. Shosanna (Mélanie Laurent), a Jewish girl whose family was killed before her eyes by the "Jew Hunter", Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz), runs a movie theatre in France and has vowed revenge.
Brad Pitt was made for this role and plays the part incredibly. An action-packed war-time fiction, Inglorious Basterds delivers.
2. Star Trek, released May 8, 2009
Newly united, James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) team up with Leonard McCoy (Karl Urban) to battle a time displaced Romulan Nero (Eric Bana) in an attempt to save two separate realities. Producer J.J. Abrams steers away from the original from the original franchise, using the time rift to encite an entirely new future...of the future.
J.J. Abrams is slowly being mentioned among the likes of Stephen Spielburg and Peter Jackson as a modern day phenom producer. Expect an Oscar nomination for him as well as possibly some for supporting cast.
1. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, released July 15, 2009
While Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) leave Hermoine Granger (Emma Watson) heartbroken, taking up interest in other girls, the characters of Draco (Tom Felton), as well as Snape (Alan Rickman), deepen, as Hogwarts is thrown into a whirlwind of madness leaving Dumbledore (Sir Michael Gambin) and Harry dumbfounded as to who they really can trust.Undoubtedly one of the best films of the year, the fifth movie of the Harry Potter adaptations is no disappointment. The maturity of actors Grint, Radcliffe, and Watson is quite evident in this newest film. Expect supporting actor nominations for Rickman as well as Grint while a nomination for best picture is in the mixer for the movie.

Post a CommentI picked them myself and you're probably right, I may need to broaden my horizons on movies a bit. I'll be sure to check out both those movies and YEAH that will probably garner potential awards as well as the new Avatar movie. Probably should have looked into it a little more rather than just going by my own opinions. Thanks
did you pick the list yourself or did you do some looking up...cus some of these don't seem all that worthy....like GI Joe, surrogates, or even x-men orgins....idk maybe its just me...but i kinda agree with DUDE...i can see pirate radio being nominated or even black dynomite....i can even see The new amilia airheart movie winning something.....idk maybe you could have picked a bigger variety of movies....just saying
i thought you did a good job ha.
inglorious basterds better get a dang award!
To be perfectly honest, I don't think Harry Potter was the best movie of the year. In fact I would probably put at least 6 of the movies I've listed here before it as well as many others.
As you can see the article is not about the best movies of the year, but movies that I believe will receive Oscars. Now, despite what you or I think, Harry Potter will more than likely not only be nominated for, but likely receive many Oscars for the simple reason that it appeals to such a wide audience. Although none of the previous movies have won Oscars, every single one of them has received nominations.
I obviously am only able to put 10 movies on this list and I apologize that your favorite wasnt one of them.
You have no movie taste, go watch Black Dynamite Pirate Radio, the new Amelia Airheart movie and come back to me saying Harry potter is the best movie to come out this year. Your such a child
