This is a classic dessert that is a favorite in America. There are many variations of this fruit pie, but the American version is usually made with an apple pie filling, a crust, and a flaky upper crust. The main ingredients are apples, a little bit of spices, (cinnamon, nutmeg), and brown sugar. Nothing really beats a warm apple pie slice right after a good meal. Apple pie is also great with a scoop of ice cream right on top. What's better than packing food for a picnic and bringing along some apple pie? Another variation of the apple pie is apple cobbler. This is basically like an apple pie, but made in a larger way. It is made in a baking dish with the same ingredients in an apple pie, but without a crust at the bottom. Many types of apples can be used in the recipe, but when you cut into the pie, it has the color of light brown cinnamon.The finished product comes out with the consistency of a bread pudding.
Blueberry Pie
This is a pie that is filled with blueberries. It is a sweet pie with little bit of a tart taste to it. When there are pie eating contests, blueberry pies are usually featured. Not much really has to be added to the blueberry filling, since blueberries are already sweet enough as it is. Extra blueberry juice is also added to keep the blueberries from drying up while baking, with some cinnamon and cornstarch. The cornstarch keeps everything together after you cut into the pie. When you cut into a blueberry pie, the color is a dark blue.This is one hearty pie that can really fill you up.
Lemon Meringue Pie
This particular pie is made with a lemon curd filling and meringue topping. It is considered to be a light pie, because half of the pie is filling, and half of it is covered with meringue. Compared to the other pies, it takes a little bit of skill to make from scratch. The filling is a yellow color.The lemon curd has to be mixed right, since the cooking process takes time. Instead of a graham cracker crust, this pie is made with a shortbread crust or a pastry crust. Lemon meringue pie is one of the favorite desserts in America.
Cherry Pie
Cherry pie is famous for its tartness and sweetness. It is also a pie that is used in pie eating contests. In cartoons, it is usually a cherry pie that is cooling off on the window sill. Some people take great pride when making a cherry pie. Instead of making the basic upper crust with slits cut in it, some go to the extremes of making elaborate designs to impress family and guests. Whatever cherries are used, the main color in the end is a dark red. A good looking cherry pie can go a long way. It taste just as great with some ice cream on top.
Chocolate Cream Pie
This pie is a favorite pie of little kids everywhere. There are many variations of this pie, with a chocolate graham cracker crust or graham cracker crust. The chocolate cream is usually a light brown in color. Half of the pie is whipped cream and the other half is chocolate cream.
Mincemeat Pie
Mincemeat pie is the only pie on this list that has meat in it. This pie has been around for centuries, since the 15th century. It originally had dried fruit and spices in it. Spices, distilled spirits, dried fruit, and meat are the main ingredients in this particular pie today, along with a crust and an upper crust. It is usually served during Thanksgiving. Mincemeat pie is usually made much smaller than a normal pie, which is 9-12 inches. A mincemeat pie is made two to three times smaller.
Sweet Potato Pie
This pie has mashed sweet potato, eggs, milk, and sugar. It is a popular pie mostly in the southern part of the United States. The sweet potato pie filling has a reddish-brown color to it. It has a crust underneath the pie, but it doesn't have a top crust. Also, the consistency of the filling depends on how much sweet potato is in the mixture. The color is usually a dark brown, but also close to a reddish-brown as well.
Coconut Cream Pie
A classic pie that is used for throwing in someone's face, and it is also popular with clowns. Besides that, this is a great pie to eat when it is hot outside. It is a light pie, that doesn't have as much weight to it as the other pies. The top part of the pie is whipped cream and the other half is the coconut cream mixture. It is light yellowish in color.
Pecan Pie
If you really want to satisfy your sweet tooth, then this is one of the pies to eat. Pecan pie is made with pecans, corn syrup, salt, and vanilla. The mixture of the pecans is what makes this a favorite for families during Thanksgiving and Christmas. This is also made with a crust, but not an upper crust.
Pumpkin Pie
This has to be one of my favorite pies. Pumpkin pie is made with pumpkin custard, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger. Although there are a few variations to the recipe, the basics stay the same- pumpkin custard and nutmeg. This pie is made in Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Halloween. This pie is really filling. Unlike the other pies in this list, where you might be able to eat three or four slices of pie, it is difficult to eat no more than two slices of pumpkin pie.
