Over the past year's e-Bay has lowered & rose fee's making it harder and harder to earn money. On top of that you have fees when you list your item, Fee's when you sell your item & fee's when you receive your payment with such services as PayPal. They may be minimal on some items but when it's all said and done you are losing money!
2. Shipping
I will be honest thru the years shipping has got more easier & cheaper, But if you are new to e-Bay and do not have the proper weight of the item or how much it will cost to ship it can cost you money. You also have to be aware of the different state symbols. I once lost money on shipping to Alaska due to the fact my brother thought it was going to Arkansas so instead of $5.00 it cost me $30 dollars. These are all things you have to take in consideration!
3. Return Policies
Even if you don't have a return policy you may still lose money. Such as PayPal they will still give your customer a return of money if they are not satisfied how the transaction went or the person was not happy with the item you sold them. Regardless of saying on the Auction SOLD AS IS NO REFUNDS. They still return the money. If you do have some one upset and you do not give a refund still they can give you bad feedback and it ruin's your reputation and people will not buy from you. So your items now will not sell for what they are supposed to.
4. Reputation
This is by far the hardest thing to do out there just starting off with e-Bay. I mean you are not going to know everything you are bound to make mistakes and if you do then you are punished with bad feedback. Even having lack of feedback or being a "Newbie" will result in lack of sales or item not selling for what you wanted to sell it for.
5. Item Values
Due to our economy everyone is trying to get that great deal, & if you don't sell it for that great deal then you are not going to get what you want for the item. This has resulted in a market with cheap item's and high shipping prices or the opposite effect. In the end if you didn't get the item for free & sell it for next to nothing it's hard to make a profit. Unless you have a item that is of high value such as Rare Items.
6. Payments
No matter the form of payment you accept you are bound to get scammed! There are so many scammers out there willing and looking to take your money. There are many ways to make sure you are safe by using services such as PayPal. But they have their ways of making money off you thru fee's and other things. Money orders are very bad to accept due to the fact of all the scam's that occurred in the past years by accepting them.
7. Scammers
This isn't e-Bay's fault they have been around forever & happens on any type of selling programs you might use. All you can do is make sure your safe & take safety precautions against them. Never give out your password and always beware of weird emails. Search the internet for known scams, The more you know the better you will be prepared against them. But e-Bay is full of them so watch out! I do believe e-Bay & PayPal both do a great job on prevention of scams.
8. Economy
This is one big reason why not to sell on e-Bay no one has the money to spend! It's the truth so in the end you don't get the price you should out of your items you are selling. Sure $20 dollars sounds good for an item you're selling but after you factor in the fee's & shipping and how long it took you to pack the item & drive to the postal office. Was it really worth it? What are you left with? How much is your time worth? Take everything in consideration.
9. Things to Sell
Even if you have a LOT of items if you didn't get them for almost next to nothing how will you turn a profit, or if you are new to e-Bay, and lack of a good reputation & Return Policy. Again the only real good items to sell are things that are very rare & worth way more then there original value or investment.
10. Better Solutions
Garage Sales, They are free & you make 100% return on your items. No Fee's, No Shipping. Better yet sell on Craigslist there is no fee's & you can have them use PayPal or Pay when they pick up the item. Search for better solution on the internet there has to be something.
In the end my own views are e-Bay at this time in our economy is a bad place to sell your Items at least for me it has been. I am not saying e-Bay is a bad company or bad people. Personally I like e-Bay! It has some of the best options for selling Items I just haven't had good experience's with them.
