Top 10 Recommended Valentine Day Songs

In the Mood for Love?

Shani Greene-Dowdell
Songs are in order from great to greatest. Let's see if our lists compare.

10) Love Makes Things Happen, by BabyFace featuring Pebbles (1990): This song takes us back to 1990 when BabyFace's smooth melodies and sensual voice was crème de la crème of music that knocked anyone desiring to be loved off of their feet. The soft and tender sounds of BabyFace mixed with the passion in Pebble's voice, along with verses that take control of your emotions places Love Makes Thing Happen number ten on this year's Valentine playlist.

9) Let's Get It On, by Marvin Gaye (1973): The feeling was all too strong, so there was no way this choice could be held back! No soulful Valentine play list can make it without Let's Get It On by Marvin Gaye. While the verses are not as tender and sweet talking as number 10, this song says to the apple of your eye in no uncertain terms, "You and I have a meeting in the bedroom in five." Thus, this is the perfect choice for upgrading a date from lukewarm to steamy.

8) My Girl, by The Temptations (1964): This oldie but goodie is a cute rendition to either quote or sing to the lady of your affection. It will absolutely give men a brownie point or two to have this disk handy and possibly to even sing a few lyrics. This one has stood the test of time.

7) Love, by Keyshia Cole (2006): Keyshia Cole's powerful voice and deep emotion invoked in this song are more than enough reason to add Love to your playlist for Valentine's Day 2010. If you are looking for a song to send a robust message letting your lover know the depth of your emotions, this is your choice. For added bonus, blindfold him/her and encourage them to listen carefully to the passion flowing through the singer's voice and lyrics.

6) Sweet Lady, by Tyrese (1999): Choice number six is another ode to the ladies. Tyrese Gibson burst upon the scene with this song that carried a masculine disposition with his raspy-deep voice and a tender loving care for a particular "sweet lady." Fellows, along with the right mixture of pampering and care, this song will make your mate feel as if they are floating on cloud nine.

5) Lost Without You, by Robin Thicke (2006): Now, we are getting down to the business of the most sensual songs ever written. In Lost WithoutYou, Mr. Robin Thicke brought out some of the magic that Michael Jackson sprinkled over the world when MJ song ballads like "Got To Be There." Robin's disposition is so delicately profound the words will flow from your speakers straight to the heart. Lovers beware: A night of passion is inevitable.

4) No Air, by Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown (2008): Tell me something. How can one breathe without air? Plain and simple, this song tells your lover that you definitely in no way, shape, or form can survive one second in this world without them. It provides a duet of a man and woman expressing their insatiable love for one anther, which is why this one made it to the #4 spot and can not be missed this Valentine Day.

3) This Magic Moment, by The Drifters (1960): And then it happened, another oldie but goodie! This Magic Moment by the Drifters has stood the test of time and is still romancing listeners across the globe. Dust off your old album collection, or upgrade to a CD, and make some magic happen.

2) When A Man Loves A Woman, by Percy Sledge (1966): Did they have it going on back in the day with the music, or did they have it going on? Percy Sledge sang When A Man Loves A Woman from the depths of his soul when he recorded in 1966, convincing 2010 music enthusiasts that in his era men truly loved women like they were supposed to be loved. This ballad provides yet another tribute to the ladies.

1) At Last, by Etta James (1961): Etta sang this song like the apple of her eye was the king of kings. At last, a melody fit for the greatest kind of love. Oh, wait! Some 47 years after Etta graced the microphone hypnotizing her listeners, President Barack and Michelle Obama were serenaded by this dawdling melody sung as a do-over by Beyonce Knowles on election night, 2008. However, slow, quaint, and tantalizing, the Etta James version of At Last made the list as the perfect choice for Valentine Day 2010.

Whatever you listen to this Valentine's Day, let the music paint a picture of love and hang the portrait on your lover's heart.

  • Oldies but goodies
  • Songs to ignite your passion
  • Songs to lighten the mood
