How can the combination of two romantic comedy powerhouses, Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker, not be good? Though there were times where I felt like their chemistry wasn't sizzling on the screen, these two deliver a solid romantic comedy with funny and touching moments. Hugh Grant plays Paul Morgan and Sarah Jessica Parker plays his wife, Meryl. When they are on the verge of divorce, they witness a crime which lands them in the Witness Relocation Program saddling them into a "simple" life in rural Wyoming. During their stint, they rediscover their emotions for each other.
9. It's Complicated (released December 2009)
It's refreshing to see a romantic comedy that doesn't center around a couple that look like bubbly Ken and Barbie dolls. Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin play a divorced couple who suddenly strike up their old fire. It's fun and these two seasoned veterans still got what it takes to make a winning movie.
8.The Ugly Truth (released July 2009)
The Ugly Truth is a romantic caper about a radio talk show host (Katherine Heigl) who agrees to work with Mike (Gerard Butler) to increase their ratings by trying to set up Abby with her "perfect" neighbor. During the process, Mike and Abby realize their feelings for each other. The Ugly Truth isn't one of the best romantic comedies of all time, but it has some fun moments in this classic Battle of the Sexes movie.
7. The Proposal (released June 2009)
Sandra Bullock has had a busy year. She continues her romantic comedy streak with The Proposal starring alongside Ryan Reynolds. Bullock plays, Margaret, a powerful and independent chief editor of a large publishing house. Reynolds plays, Andrew, her under-appreciated executive assistant. When Margaret faces deportation since she is a Canadian with an expired Visa, she devises a plan to marry Andrew. Andrew in return will get a promotion and a book deal. Hilarity and antics ensue when the couple travels to Alaska for Andrew's grandparents 90th anniversary where they are followed by a skeptical immigration officer determined to unearth the true relationship between Margaret and Andrew.
6. He's Just Not that into You (released February 2009)
This romantic comedy is based on the bestselling book by Greg Behrendt and Liz TuccilloIn. It centers around five women and four men who try to analyze and decipher the subtle signs that men and women give when interacting with each other. It gives interesting insight and is just a fun movie to watch and wonder of yourself, "Do I do that?"
5. Management (released May 2009)
Jennifer Aniston continues to choose unconventional roles that take her out of her acting comfort zone. Who would have anticipated her and Steve Zahn as potential love interests? This is a romantic comedy with some stalker twists and goofy, uncomfortable moments, but it's worth a gander.
4. The Invention of Lying (released October 2009)
This is a creative and funny romantic comedy starring Ricky Gervais. Imagine a world where everyone is honest and the "lie" does not exist. When Mark (Ricky Gervais) is trying to comfort his mother on her deathbed, he discovers a penchant for "lying" when he tells her of the afterlife. Using his newly found invention to his advantage, he decides to turn his life around-one lie at a time.
3. Paper Heart (released August 2009)
Paper Heart is a refreshing and touching romantic comedy starring two talented actors, Charlyne Yi and Michael Cera. The movie revolves around a jaded girl who is trying to make a documentary about what "love" is. During the process of interviewing people from all over the country about their takes on love, she meets and develops feelings for Michael Cera.
2. Funny People (released July 2009)
Funny People may not fit into the romantic comedy genre, but I felt that it deserved to be on my Top Romantic Comedy List because it did have heartfelt moments about a guy who tries to get back "that girl who got away." Adam Sandler is a successful comedian, but when he is diagnosed with a life threatening condition, he realizes the things in life he's overlooked and let go.
1. 500 days of Summer (released July 2009)
500 Days of Summer is a quirky and sweet romantic comedy starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Tom who desperately wants to be in love. He flashbacks to his summer with Summer (Deschanel) and their rollercoaster relationship.
