Top 10 Selling Automobiles for 2006

Linda M. McCloud
Each year, people are out shopping for automobiles. Yet, each year their priorities changes. Some factors that cause these changes are the price of gas, their budget, the size of their family and the potential growth in their careers. For this reason, every year the lists of the top selling cars changes.

For the year 2006, most buyers had one thing in mind when they were shopping for automobiles, fuel efficiency. Gas rates went up and down all year. Unfortunately, the rates stayed higher than they were a year ago.

Smaller, fuel efficient cars were very popular on shoppers' lists. SUV's and Vans no longer made the top selling lists. Yet, those big muscular trucks are still big sellers. Why? Men need them for work. They are willing to pay the price for the gas to get their work done right. They need the extra weight to haul what they need. A smaller truck would mean more trips and more time away from work.

Yet, when it came to every day life, the smaller vehicles were the top choices for buyers.

Here is the complete list of the top ten best selling vehicles for 2006 according to forbes.com.

1. Ford F Series Pickup. The base price for the Ford F Series pickup is $19,640. At the end of August of 2006, all ready 19,640 of these had been sold.

2. Chevrolet Silverado Pickup. The base price for the Silverado is $16,740. At the end of August of 2006, all ready 434,937 had been sold.

3. Toyota Camry Convertible Coupe and Sedan. The base price for the Camry is $18,270. At the end of August of 2006, 302,636 of these had been sold.

4. Toyota Corolla Sedan. The base price for the Corolla is $14,205. At the end of August of 2006 274,074 had been sold.

5. Honda Accord Coupe and Sedan. The base price for the Honda is $18,625. At the end of August of 2006, 250,663 had been sold.

6. Dodge Ram Pickup. The base price for the Dodge Ram is $22,050. At the end of August, 250,144 had been sold.

7. Honda Civic Coupe and Sedan. The base price for the Honda Civic is $14,810. At the end of August, 225,212 had been sold.

8. Chevrolet Impala Sedan. The base price for the Impala is $21,515. At the end of August, 197,304 had been sold.

9. Chevrolet Cobalt Coupe and Sedan. The base price for the Cobalt is $13,665. At the end of August, 163,343 had been sold.

10. Nissan Atima Sedan. The base price for the Atima is $19,600. At the end of August 154,909 had been sold.

Of course, as some cars made it to the top of the best selling lists, others made it to the best decline lists. These were the top cars that made the decline list: Isuzu's Ascender SUV, Porsche's Boxster Convertible, Jaquar's XJ Sedan and the Mercedes G-Class SUV.

Will these same automobiles make it to the top of the list next year? Only time will tell? The tastes of the consumer may change. The gas prices may change (lets hope). One thing will remain the same though, we will keep buying automobiles (no matter how ridiculously priced they are).

  • No SUV's or Vans made the top selling list for 2006.
  • Consumers were looking for more fuel efficient automobiles.
  • Trucks were still a big seller
Although fuel efficiency was on consumer's minds, big muscular trucks like the Dodge Ram were still a big seller in 2006.
