Top 10 Simple Ways to Stay Fit

Everywhere you look there are stories about the importance of being fit. Many people think that being fit means spending hours at a gym, never eating fatty foods again, and basically being miserable for the perfect body. However, being fit can be incredibly simple and easy to fit into the average person's day to day life.

1. Walk whenever you can. Instead of driving around looking for a front parking spot at the mall or grocery store, park farther away. Take the stairs instead of opting for the elevator. You now have the benefits of a treadmill and stair step machine. If you live close to your destination, consider walking instead of driving. Walking is great exercise and requires nothing more than a good pair of shoes.

2. Eat more. The first meal many people skip when starting a diet is breakfast. Breakfast is crucial to staying fit since it jumpstarts you metabolism and wakes your body. Also, snacking between meals helps you control your portions during meal time. Obviously, you should try to eat healthy snacks such as fruits and vegetables or baked chips if you really want junk food. Adding in breakfast and healthy snacks is an easy way to eat more and still control you weight.

3. Get plenty of sleep. Your body needs sleep in order to function correctly. Your body can't burn calories as well or reap the benefits of the nutrients in your food if you don't get enough sleep. Exercise and diet does little good if your body suffers from sleep deprivation. After all, if you're tired, you won't feel like exercising.

4. Exercise while you work. There are many ways to exercise while at work. Crunches can be done while in an office chair. Take frequent breaks to stretch if your job requires you sit. If you tend to stand more, do a few squats every so often and walk around as much as possible. Office workers can also benefit from walking around. Instead of emailing a co-worker, take the time to walk to their office. Walking, stretching, lifting, and even squatting are easy ways to stay fit while working.

5. Housework is a great work out. Cleaning benefits more than just your home. Vacuuming and dusting requires quite a bit of lifting, squatting, and walking. You have to do it anyway, so why not reap the fitness benefits while you're at it. Yard work is also another easy way to stay fit while working around the house. Knowing that you're combining exercise with chores will make you feel like you're getting more done.

6. Exercise can be done in small bursts. While it is recommended to exercise in 30 minute to 60 minute segments, small bursts of exercise can benefit you just as much. Taking three or four 10 minute breaks to exercise will help you stay fit and fit into your schedule easier. Take one break to stretch, another to run in place, another to do a few yoga poses, and a last one to lift some light weights. Each break provides a different type of exercise. Working out for a few minutes is easier to do and helps you stick with your exercise longer.

7. Stop smoking, drinking, and taking drugs. Nothing hurts your body more than drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes. These addictions are hazardous to your health and make it harder to stay fit. You will need to work out harder and longer to even begin to counter the effects of these products. Make life easier and simply stop these bad habits. You'll feel better and stay fit easier.

8. Reduce the stress in your life. Take steps to rid yourself of as much stress as possible. Stress makes it harder to loose weight and creates other health problems as well. Take time to relax and reduce stress. The lack of stress will make your other fitness efforts more effective.

9. Take advantage of fitness programs. There are videos and television shows focused on fitness. These cost much less than gym memberships and take you step by step through exercise programs you can do in the comfort of your home. Often times, exercising at home is less daunting and more effective than going to a gym.

10. Create a support group. Friends and family can be a big help in keeping you motivated to stay fit. Take time to work out with a friend or family member. When you feel stressed, give them a call. By supporting each other, everyone benefits. It is much easier to stay fit when you have support than going at it alone.

Staying fit is incredibly simple. These ten tips will help you achieve your fitness goals and stay fit for life.
