Skill #1 - Communication
Good communication skills are key to getting hired. Become an active listener by actually listening and asking leading questions. Your communication skills should include verbal and writing abilities.
Skill #2 - Research
Your research skills will put you above the pack if you can display your ability to make quick assessments, find pertinent, factual information and accurately identify key issues.
Skill #3 - Flexibility
Today, companies survive the economic downturn by being flexible. You should understand that on some days, you will be required to answer phones and juggle tasks that may not be in your job description. Multi-tasking and managing multiple tasks show that you can be trusted when the pressure is on.
Skill #4 - Tech Knowledge
Everyone should know how to use a computer. Have basic understanding of how a computer works and how to use simple software like spreadsheets and word processors.
Skill #5 - Management Skills
This skill shows the hiring person that you have the ability to manage time and difficult situations, and that you can motivate a team of people. Good management skills will pay off when it comes time to coach or lead a team to higher performance.
Skill #6 - Organizing
Organizational skills are important, especially if your predecessor left a big mess behind. Organization skill can mean planning events, planning changes and reorganizing current departmental systems.
Skill #7 - Teamwork
No skill will matter if your team does not want to work with you. Most jobs require some interaction between employees, and quite often the interaction is ongoing and interdependent. Show your teamwork skills by listing your ability to build a winning team on your resume.
Skill #8 - Problem Solving
It is natural for some employees to shut down when there is a crisis, but the stellar employee will find this is his time to shine. Problem solving is an important skill, regardless of what type of company it is. Describe yourself as "innovative" or "creative" in your list of skills.
Skill #9 - Culturally Sensitive
While companies welcome diversity, they may not have the skills to successfully navigate this undertaking. In that case, the employer will be looking for someone who is culturally sensitive.
Skill #10 - Creativity
If you have taken part in local play productions, float building or decorating for parties, your skills can be used on the job. Let your potential boss know how creative you are and what you could bring to the table.
