Top 10 Songs of 2009

1) Wild Horses (Susan Boyle): Upon first listening to this song, I was moved to tears. A voice so clear and crisp, capable of breathing new life into a song already made legendary by Mick Jagger. Thank you, Susan Boyle, for reminding us of the essentials of music

2) Obsessed (Mariah Carey): Air-tight beats and a heavy dose of can't-touch-this attitude, allowed Mariah to lash back at Eminem with this catchy tune that showed you don't need four-letter words to get your point across

3) Warm Heart of Africa (Warm Heart of Africa): This multi-ethnic band created world music that is very accessible but not in the least bit watered down. Totally refreshing

4) Boom Boom Pow (Black Eyed Peas): "I'm so 3008, you so 2000 and late". Clearly lyrics are an afterthought for the Peas. Who cares? Their mix of electronic and hip-hop sounds gave us the year's best booty-shaking, back-breaking song.

5) I Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas): Whether I'm having a good or a bad day, this song makes me feel like I can conquer the world. And there simply is no better feeling

6) Shake Me Like A Monkey (Dave Matthews Band):" I like my coffee with toast and jelly but I'd rather be licking you from your back to your belly". Oh Dave, your uncanny ability to layer subtle sexual lyrics on top of ambiguous world beats leave me wondering, Where's my toast???

7) Russian Roulette (Rihanna): Love's a gamble. And after seeing how badly that gamble ended for Rihanna, this song showcases her newfound maturity and sound. Music is definitely a sure bet for her

8) Celebration (Madonna): The only new song on Madonna's greatest hits collection is a throwback to her early hits. Enjoy a night out, flirt with the cute boy you'll probably never see again and just let go. A celebration of life and of one of the greatest pop artists of our time

9) Paparazzi (Lady Gaga): Separately the lyrics and techno beats are standard issue. But put together with the Lady's attention-getting costumes and videos, the result is a match made in pop music heaven

10) Use Somebody (Kings of Leon): Beautifully showcasing lead singer Caleb Followill's raspy voice, the boys of Leon bring back arena rock - not the big-haired rock of the 80s, but true rock based on solid vocals, lyrics, and instruments

I enjoyed your personal insight into why the songs are there, and it was fun to read! I'm cheering for you to get some "toast" from Dave! (hehehe...)
