Top 10 Songs of 2009

Michelle Campeau
Just about everyone has his or her favorite song. Some songs are only good enough to be a favorite of the week, or the month, and then they're just overplayed. Looking back on this past year, there are a few that jump out at me for being good, not just for the moment, but worthy of being best song of the year. I came up with a list of my favorites for this past year.

#1: Use Somebody- Kings of Leon

I love the raspy, sexy voice of the lead singer, Caleb, when he belts out the start of this song:

"I've been roaming around, I was looking down at all I see
Painted faces fill the places I can't reach
You know that I could use somebody"

And possibly my favorite line, which made me connect to this song is:

"I hope it's gonna make you notice
Someone like me,"

#2. Single Ladies- Beyonce

Who doesn't enjoy this upbeat song? And especially the mock-ups that other celebrities put together. I think it was Saturday Night Live where Justin Timberlake was dressed in the black leotard and heels dancing to this song. And it was also on the Halloween episode of Live with Regis and Kelly this year. My 8-month-old daughter even loves this song! I'm not sure, but it possibly has something to do with my glucose test when I was pregnant with her. I distinctly remember watching this comedian acting like Barack Obama dancing to this song while I was waiting at the Dr. office during the 3 hour test. All that sugar and that dancing beat had her going in my tummy! She must still remember it subconsciously!

#3. Just Dance- Lady Gaga

This is another song for my daughter- among other reasons. She had colic when she was a baby. The only thing that would calm her was music. It was so bad one day that I was holding her and dancing around to the music praying for her to calm down. This song came on and I was rocking her back and forth, up and down, I made my own little dance routine. She loved it! She went from crying to laughing.

#4. Boom Boom Pow- Black Eyed Peas

I remember having this song in my head when I came home from work one of those first days after maternity leave. My daughter was playing on the floor and I was leaned over her singing what was in my head... "Gotta get that, Gotta get that... Boom Boom Boom" She thought it was funny, or she was just happy to see me!

They are kind of conceded if you think about it though: "I'm so 3008, you so 2000 and late" But again, it's another up beat pop hit that gets you moving.

#5. Circus- Britney Spears

Oh Britney, what happened to your sweet little innocent "Baby One More Time" album? What happened to the Mickey Mouse Club House cute little crush on Justin Timberlake (how many times can I bring him up, I don't even have him on my list!) She sure hit rock bottom, didn't she? But I think she's climbing back up and this song... it's just the ticket!

I like how it's almost talking in the beginning, the music low. Then it gets a little louder when she gets to "I feel the adrenaline moving through my veins," you can almost feel your own adrenaline pumping, getting ready for the song. Then BOOM- fast and loud- "All eyes on me in the center of the ring just like a circus"
Beautiful.

#6. Paparazzi -Lady Gaga

I really don't like Lady Gaga. I think she is very disturbed, and very strange. However, she has some good beats. This song is so soft and ... that boy crazy type of song, that you really don't know she's as crazy as she is until you see her... like at the MTV music awards show. That's when I was really let in on her craziness factor.

#7. Battlefield- Jordan Sparks

I think it's more of the beat than the lyrics for me on most songs. It's the beat that strikes the mood, the dance in my heart, the ticks in my head. I love the part of the music where she's singing:

"I never meant to start a war,
you know I never want to hurt you,
don't even know what we're fighting for"

The music lifts up, gets louder, I guess I'm figuring out through this I like when the song changes from being quiet to loud at important parts. It really makes the song fun.

#8. Already Gone- Kelly Clarkston

Every girl has a few favorite songs that are just girly, about a relationship that makes you think about a certain person in your life. This could be classified as one of those songs. It's pretty, and contains message about the girl being strong, even though she's feeling a lot of emotion about a past relationship.

#9. You Belong with Me- Taylor Swift

I'm starting to like Taylor Swift, even though I'm not a country fan. She's more pop country I would say, anyway. This song brings you back to high school for sure, not that that is a place I'd really like to go back to! I think it's creative how she compares herself to this 'other girl.'

"She wears high heels, I wear sneakers, she's cheer caption and I'm on the bleachers."

It's just a fun-loving song.

#10. Party in the USA- Miley Cyrus

I like how she makes this song like everyday life...well not exactly because she's in Hollywood... but she makes it a situation that everyone has thought at one time or another "put my hands up they're playing my song, the butterflies fly away...you know I'm going to be ok." Everyone has "their song" that they love and calms them or gets them excited, no matter what. It just makes this song very relatable. It's also upbeat and fun, which I obviously like, looking back at my list!

And those are the ten songs that stand out to me as being the best of 2009. This is in my own opinion, of course. And don't forget, my opinion matters because "I'm so three thousand and eight, you so two thousand and late!"
