Top 10 Songs for the Fall Season

Fall is a wonderful time of the year, with cool breezes and the beautiful gold and red colors of the season. But autumn can also be depressing, as we dream of the warmer, happier times and cheerful beach songs of the summer. But whatever your feelings about fall are, there sure to be some songs on this list that you can enjoy during the autumn:

'Forever Autumn' by The Moody Blues - A mixture of flute, guitar, and lovely (but sad) lyrics describing the autumn atmosphere and a love lost simulate the slow, sad fall of leaves to the ground as winter approaches. This is one of the best songs when it comes to fall imagery, and it's definitely one of the most beautiful.

'Scarborough Fair' by Simon & Garfunkel - Keeping in the same mood as the song above, this is one of my fall favorites. It's one of those songs that probably doesn't make sense with regards to your own life (unless you're heading to the Scarborough Fair sometime in the autumn), but it has a bittersweet and mystical feel to, and somehow the mention of spices and a love lost give it an autumn vibe.

'Into the Mystic' by Van Morrison - This is one of my favorite songs of all time; it's not really happy or sad, so since it falls somewhere in between, it's a perfect song for autumn. It makes me think of cool mists and refreshing breezes, and it really makes me wish I was spending my fall by the seaside.

'September' by Earth, Wind & Fire - This is one of the more upbeat songs on this list, and the only disco hit. Of course it's great for playing early on in the fall during September, but you can continue to keep your autumn rockin' with this song that makes you want to dance (just be sure to wear your red and gold platforms to stay color-coordinated with the fall atmosphere).

'Alice's Restaurant' by Arlo Guthrie - This is one of the few songs I've ever heard that I consider a "Thanksgiving song". It tells a story that takes place during Thanksgiving; it's really long; and it's incredibly funny. So later on in the autumn when you're heading out to Grandma's for turkey, play this classic to keep everyone entertained. (It's a tradition to play it on Thanksgiving for some radio stations.)

'Wake me up When September Ends' by Green Day - If you don't feel like having a happy September full of disco music, then you could listen to one of the saddest songs on this list. It's actually a song about death, but for some reason September really is one of those boring fall months that we all wouldn't mind sleeping through.

'The Boys of Summer' by Don Henley - This is one of the best songs about the end of summer. It's a haunting, synthesizer-filled masterpiece that's really about aging, but can also be seen viewed as being about the end of summer lovin' and the beginning of autumn regret.

'Autumn Almanac' by The Kinks - This is one of the more upbeat songs about the fall, with a fun pop feel to it and The Kinks' kooky and imaginative lyrics. It's full of autumn imagery like raking leaves, football, and very yummy (but very English) fall foods. So if fall is your favorite time of the year, you might appreciate this cheerful tune about the season.

'October' by U2 - It's sad and slow and not one of U2's greatest songs, but it really fits fall perfectly (I can just picture leaves slowing falling to the ground while listening to it).

'Maggie May' by Rod Stewart - This song could be about the end of a summer love, as the lyrics mention going back to school. It may not be one of the most autumn-oriented songs on this list, but it's perfect for anyone who has ended a summer romance and spent their fall reminiscing about it.
