Top 10 Songs by My Favorite Music Artist

"Alabama" Country Music Legends

Toni Murphy
On Arpil 21,1980, Alabama signed with RCA records. They became a driving force in country music with a total of 42 number one singles. That is more number one singles than any other band in country music history. The group's soulful southern ballads stirred emotions in women of all ages. They even managed to hit the Pop airwaves with Love in the First Degree and Lady Down on Love.

Alabama was the first group to win the Country Music Association "Entertainer of the Year" award for three straight years and five straight years for the Academy of Country Music.

May, 2002, to the disappointment of thousands of fans, Alabama announced, that after approximately 26 years in country music, they would give their farewell tour in 2003.

According to Randy Owen, Alabama's founder and lead singer, the group had one rule that they believe helped to lead to their huge success. That rule was to follow their hearts and their feelings and they did it all just by being themselves.

It is hard to pick just 10 songs from a group that has such a succeessful repertoire of songs but the following are some of my favorites and the albums that they appeared on.

!. Dixieland Delight - appeared on the album Alabama Live and was released as a single in 1983. This is a song about a man who has worked hard all week for his money and now he is ready for a little Saturday night fun in the company of a home grown country girl.

2. Mountain Music - appeared on the album Mountain Music. The single was released in 1982. This song written by lead singer, Randy Owen, brought out the group's cheerful southern rocker side. The song talks about the music that grandma and grandpa use to play. It told how everyone use to just sit on the front porch and enjoy nature, friends and family. They'd sit for hours watching the kids play baseball with chert rocks and sawmill slabs for bats.

3. Roll On - a song from the album Roll On. It appeared as a single in 1984.The song tells of a truck driver's family at home worrying and waiting for his return. It talks of the Mother's belief in God as she prays to the Man Upstairs to bring her husband home safely.

4. 40 Hour Week - from the album 40 Hour Week. Released in 1985. Both this song and Roll on present the people they are singing about as blue collar heros. This song goes on to thank the auto workers, the still mill workers, fire fighters, farmers, etc for all the time that they give to make this country what it is.

5. She and I - from the album For the Record. Released in 1986. This is the song of a couple who all they need are their wants and desires and each other. This is a peppy song that brings out the group's pop side.

6. Here We Are - appeared on the album Pass it on Down. It was released in 1991. A lot of Alabama's songs speak of love, family, relationships and endurance. Though they all approach it in a different way this one talks of a relationship that is stronger than ever because of the hard times that they have been through and survived together.

7. Song of the South - released in 1988 as a single. It appeared on the album Southern Star. This is another one to show Alabama's pop side and their deep southern roots as it talks about sweet potato pie and picking cotton. Talks of a family so poor that they couldn't even tell when Wall Street fell.

8. The Cheap Seats - released in 1994. It was on the group's album Reckless. This song continues to demonstrate Alabama's lifetime commitment to quality "message" lyrics as it talks about a small unkown town with an unknown baseball team that suddenly isn't so small or unknown when one of the baseball players hits the big time.

9. Jukebox In My Mind - from the album Pass it on Down. It wasreleased in 1990. You can't get any more stone cold country than this song. Tells how each song on the jukebox takes him back to the time when the girl was his and how with each song he goes a little more insane.

10. Old Flame - released in 1981. It was on the album Feels so Right. It talks of the looks that pass between two old lovers that doesn't go unnoticed by the girl's present lover. According to Al Campbell of AllMusic this song shows the traditional side of Alabama's repertoire. It became Alabama's third #1 hit on the Billboard's Hot Country Singles.

These are the songs I picked as my favorite of Alabama's number one hits. If you get the chance I hope that you will listen to them and see if they would be your top 10 picks of Alabama's huge library of hit singles..
