Top 10 Songs by Hannah Montana

A Father and Daughter Perspective

Chris Matier
Before I get any farther with this review, let me tell you neither I, nor the piece you are about to read, is weird. Yes, I am a 34-year-old man. Yes, I am writing a piece on the top 10 Hannah Montana songs. No, you do not need to call the police.

I happen to be the father of a Hannah Montana expert - an aficionado, if you will. My 8-year-old daughter has perfected the Hannah Montana Wii game, I have taken her to to the Hannah Montana concert, I have taken her to the Hannah Montana 3D movie, and I have even lost a bet with her and her class and wore a Hannah Montana Wig at a school assembly (OK, that part is weird). She and, by proxy, I, know every Hannah Montana song there is. So, for the purposes of this review, we interviewed each other. I (Dad) asked her (M) about her five favorite songs, and she (M) asked me (Dad) about mine.

We present the top 10 Hannah Montana songs:

Dad: You ready M?
M: Yep. What do you want to know?
Dad: What are your favorite Hannah Montana Songs?
M: Do Miley Cyrus songs count?
Dad: I hope so, I am choosing some.
M: OK, My favorite songs are:

Pumping up the Party:
I like that song because it is a hip-hop song you can rock out to. It is like it is Rock-hop or Hip-roll. I like when she sings real pretty [the chorus] in the middle. My friends and I sing it at lunch at school, we have a lunch party.

Rocking Around The Christmas Tree:
My friend and I wrote a musical to this song. Our teacher let us perform it. It was the best. Hannah Montana's Christmas Song is so much better than all of your old Christmas Music.

Dad: Ouch.
M: I also really like:

Nobody's Perfect: Hannah Montana's Nobody's Perfect reminds me to have [perseverance] and to not give up. I like that Hannah Montana is a hero like that. She tells me to never give up.

Old Blue Jeans: I love it when you play the Nintendo Wii Hannah Montana Game. When you dance to Old Blue Jeans you look funny. I want to video you doing that and put it on youtube.

Dad: No you don't.
M: Yes I do. But really, Old Blue Jeans is a great dance song. I also like that it teaches girls that it is ok to be who they are. They don't have to try to be someone they are not.

If We Were a Movie: My favorite, number one Hannah Montana song is If We Were a Movie. It's a Love Song. I think it is so sweet. Remember when we went to the concert? We danced to that song. Hannah Montana looked so happy when she sang that song, and I loved dancing with you to it.

Dad: Yeah, that was fun. I loved that night.
M: What are your favorite songs dad?
Dad: Well, some of mine are Miley Cyrus songs, but I think they will count:

Who Said:
I really like Who Said. I like that song because it makes me think about how amazing of a little girl I have. Like Hannah Montana, you can be anything you want to be. When I see you singing "Who said I can't be Superman," I like that. It makes me proud of you.

Make Some Noise: I also like Make Some Noise. It is kind of a rock song. When you and your friends were dancing to that song at your birthday party, you were having a blast. Any song that can make an 8 year old so happy has got to be a good one.

M: Yeah, that Hannah Montana song is another Rock-hop song.
Dad: See You Again: Even though it is a Miley Cyrus song, I like See You Again. For me, that song gets stuck in my head so easily. The base line, the percussion, and the lyrics are as catchy as can be. It would be a good song by any artist.

I Miss You: I also like I miss You. The story behind this song is that Miley Cyrus is singing to her grandfather who has passed away. That is a sweet girl who would do something like that. It encourages me to know that my daughter can actually have roll model that is worth looking up to.

Ready, Set, Don't Go: My favorite Hannah Montana song is Ready, Set, Don't Go.

M: Dad, that is really her dad's song. Miley and her dad sing it together.
Dad: I know. Like I said, it's my favorite.

I hugged my daughter then, and that's where the interview ended. It is not everyday that a father and his pre - 'tween daughter can sit down and have a conversation about music. Really, that is what I appreciate about Hanna Montana and Miley Cyrus.

It might not be normal for me to have a list of favorite favorite songs, but I do have a favorite daughter, and that makes it all ok.
