Top 10 Songs by Heart

Luke M.
They came from Seattle in the 1970s. Their music was a mixture of hard rock and folk music. They have delivered a lot of great songs and memories from the '70s to today. There was a period in the beginning of the 1980s when they almost disappeared. But, the band would make a comeback in the mid-'80s, giving us some pretty awesome power ballads.

Did you know the only two members that have stuck with the band from the beginning are the sisters, Ann and Nancy Wilson? Seems fitting since both ladies was the voice of the group. Ann was on lead vocals and Nancy was backup.

The band was originally called, White Heart before it was shortened to Heart. By chance, Ann Wilson was discovered in the early 1970s. Nancy would join the group in '72. By 1974, Heart consisted of such members as Ann, Nancy, Steven Fossen, John Hannah, Brian Johnstone, and Roger Fisher.

Here is my 10 favorite songs by this great band. They might bring back memories. They might make you want to go out and buy one of their 'Greatest Hits' albums. Nothing will change the fact that these are some of the greatest songs from 1970s and 1980s.

These Dreams - Released in 1985, the song was so big that it was Heart's first hit to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Did you know that this defining '80s song was originally offered to Fleetwood Mac's own Stevie Nicks? She turned it down, but Heart was impressed by the song and agreed to use it for their next album called, Heart. I'm personally glad they did. As much as I admire the work of Stevie Nicks, These Dreams wouldn't be as great as it is in anyone else's hands. .

Straight On - Released in 1978 on the album, Dog and Butterfly, this awesome '70s rock song peaked at #15 on the Billboard Hot 100. But it's popularity has only grown since, appearing on the soundtrack of Grand Theft Auto IV. It was Heart's third song to get in the top 20 on the Hot 100 chart.

Magic Man - Released on the album, Dreamboat Annie in 1976, Magic Man was written by Ann and Nancy Wilson, and influenced by the romantic relationship between Ann and band manager, Mike Fisher. This amazing rock song may have been Heart's first Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, but it's gone on to become a milestone in 1970s rock music. If you haven't heard Magic Man by now, you've literally been living under a rock for the last 30 years.

Barracuda - What Heart top ten list would be complete without this defining rock song. Released in 1977 on the album, Little Queen, Barracuda was Heart's 2nd top-twenty hit on Billboard Hot 100. The song has become Heart's signature song, playing all over the radio ever since it first debutted. Did you know that VH1 recently named Barracuda the 34th best hard rock song of all time? Rightly so, this is one amazing and timeless song. Take it from me, Barracuda is also a great dance song. It'll certainly make you sweat.

Alone - Heart's second greatest song from the 1980s, Alone was released on the album, Bad Animals in 1987. For a power ballad, Alone is definitely one of the best. However, this great song wasn't Heart's to begin with. Did you know that even John Stamos recorded it in his role as Gino Minelli for the soundtrack to the CBS sitcom, Dreams in '84? Well, I think Heart literally brought the heart to this song. And, I usually don't like remakes.

Crazy on You - Also released in 1976 on the album, Dreamboat Annie, Crazy on You really shows how well the band blended folk music and hard rock. The song was written by Ann and Nancy Wilson. Ann has revealed that the song was influenced by the stress of Vietnam, and written under the influence of mushrooms. I'm glad Ann was so honest and I'm glad they did those mushrooms, because they produced another one of the greatest songs from the 1970s.

What About Love - Released with These Dreams and many other great tunes on the album, Heart, What About Love is another one of the greatest songs from the '80s. It was the band's "comeback" single. It was Heart's first song in 5 years to break into the top ten on the charts. It was the first of many great power ballads for the band. Like many of Heart's other great songs, What About Love was replayed a lot on MTV.

Never - On what could be the band's greatest album of the 1980s, Heart, released in 1985, Never found great popularity as a music video on MTV. The song also peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. If you ask me, Never has a brilliant '80s sound, but it doesn't feel dated. This is just one of many reasons to put Never on this list.

Nothin' At All - Released on the album, Heart in 1985, Nothin' At All is another defining song from the '80s. It peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The music video for Nothin' At All was also a hot number on MTV. Like so many others from the album, Heart, Nothin' At All is truly one of the best songs from the 1980s.

If Looks Could Kill - Another big hit released on the album, Heart, this glorious hard rock song was unfortunately left hanging at No. 54 on the Billboard Hot 100. But, I think If Looks Could Kill has grown in popularity since. It's a great dance song and definitely a great song to rock out to. Did you know the song was recorded by Pamela Stanley as a pop song for the Arnold Schwarzenegger action film, Raw Deal?
