Top 10 Songs by Remy Zero

jonathan shaw
Remy Zero; an alternative rock band from Birmingham, Alabama, made up of Cinjun Tate (vocals, guitar), Shelby Tate (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Gregory Slay (drums, percussion), Cedric Lemoyne (bass guitar), and Jeffrey Cain (guitar). They had conections to radiohead, but will be immortalised for being behind the theme tune for Smallville.

My top ten Remy Zero songs are:

10. Christmas
This song was the last on Remy Zero's first albumn - self titled. It brings the feeling of the festive holiday in an ulternative light. If played with the volume low it keep be relaxing after a days work.

9. Glorious #1
This song feels like cat, like a feral prowl. Heavy guitar and certain lyrics do make this feel more like a Radiohead song, but I'm not complaining.

8. Out/In
This is a beutiful song. The feeling of love aches through you like a battering ram. The first thing I pictured, actually, was the break up of my girl friend, when I heard this one.

7. Impossibility
From its haunting begining, this genuinely feels like a detective song. From the video on youtube showing Atomic testing, it certainly envokes a feeling of betrayal, which all of us feel, and it makes me feel better knowing that other have felt that feeling! Feels a bit short though.

6. Smile
Still with Golden Hum, this song is more relaxed, and at first has touches of a country song. The bridges have this incredible guitar struming that tickles my eardrums. Another self discovery song. Perfect.

5. Hollow
Now for a song from 'Villa Elaine' albumn. Hollow has a sort of sweeping grandeur about it, yet it does bring out the best in you. Strangly, I have yet to see a video of this song on youtube. I wonder why.

4. Life in Rain
A song thats so quite is almost fragile enough to shatter if you were to sing along with it. Cinjun Tate is solo on this one with his guitar. Indeed,
every song on Villa Elaine is perfect and each is different to the last.

3. Bitter
A "waiting" song. Fourth on Golden Hum. Reminds me of when someone losses thier faith. As in Leonard Cohen, beautiful, but music you can slash a wrist to.

2. Goodbye Little World
The longest remy Zero song I have seen so far, at over five mintues. It begins a little childish, as the teeks remind me of my childhood. But its a happy song, as it praises "were alive". Yet it indicates the lack of control we have over death. Well done.

1. Save Me
The Classic. From the third albumn, The Golden Hum. As soon as I heard it at the begining of Smallville on Channel Four I was hooked. I knew this song would be good, as would be the band. It really does bring a sense of comfort and relief over one's self. Feelings of love, courage, strength. It really is a hero song. And nothing is better when he sings that one line "I'll make this whole world shine for you." This song is in my blood.

This band revels in the music's contradictions: bleak yet comforting, hopeful and cynical. It a pity they are not working right now, but these songs are in my blood. And to me they represent England! Long live Remy Zero, and Save Me!
