Top 10 Songs by Sublime

Britt Baker
Sublime formed in 1988 in Long Beach, California, and rose in popularity before too long. Sublime consisted of members Bradley Nowell (guitar and vocals), Eric Wilson (bass), and Bud Gaugh (drums/percussion). The band broke up when Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose in 1996. The band has released several albums to date, including three studio albums, one live album, one box set, five compilation albums, as well as three EPs and continues to rise in popularity to this day. I first listened to Sublime around 2003, and I've been a huge fan ever since. Here's my choices for the top 10 songs by a band who mixes many genres, and thus appeals to many individuals.

10. "What I Got" from Sublime

"What I Got" was Sublime's hugest radio hit, and rigthfully so. The song is sure to be found on most top 10 lists of Sublime's songs, with it's catchy lyrics and feel good lyrics.

9. "Doin' Time" from Sublime

The final track on Sublime's self-titled 1996 album was released as a single on November 25, 1996. This song always helps me get into a positive mood with it's lounge music style and positive vibes.

8. "Chick on My Tip" from Second-hand Smoke

This song is incredibly raw and quite intense, actually. It may be a surprising choice for a top 10 list of Sublime's greatest songs, but I think it is a song that is unfortunately overlooked more often than not in Sublime's incredible discography.

7. "Seed" from Sublime

"Seed" is one of Sublime's heavier songs, displaying amazing guitar riffs and vocals from Bradley Nowell. It is very punk influenced in its style, and a great example of Sublime's incredible way of depicting varying styles of music.

6. "Slow Ride" from Second-hand Smoke

This funky and fresh song by Sublime is found on a compilation album released the year after singer Bradley Nowell died. You can certainly hear the passion in Nowell's voice on this track, and the beat chosen for this song rings perfectly in tune with the lyrics.

5. "Santeria" from Sublime

"Santeria" shows of the emotional side of Sublime, which is not seen nearly as often as the band's upbeat, carefree attitude. This song tells a story, as some of Sublime's other songs do, of somewhat of a love triangle.

4. "Wrong Way" from Sublime

My fourth choice on Sublime's top 10 songs list, "Wrong Way," was a single from Sublime's self-titled album, and a very popular one at that - spending 26 weeks on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart and peaking at number 3 in 1997.

3. "Garden Grove" from Sublime

The first track off of Sublime's popular self-titled album is a great opener to the album, and it is one of the many songs that pays homage to the band's mascot, Lou Dog, who was very dear to all of Sublime's members.

2. "40oz. to Freedom" from 40oz. to Freedom

This passionate song that exemplifies the carefree attitude of the band Sublime, is the title track off their album and certainly lives up to that with it's incredible guitar riffs and vocals by Bradley Nowell. It's sure to be a favorite of nearly every Sublime fan, and it clearly earns a spot on most top 10 Sublime song lists.

1. "Greatest Hits" from Robbin' the Hood

This may not be one of Sublime's best known songs, but it has been my favorite for quite some time. The mix between lyrics and music, with their definitive ska beats exemplifies the fun attitude of Sublime. The song pays tribute to The Ziggens, who were contemporaries with Sublime, and "contains a sample of "Zungguzungguguzungguzeng!" by Yellowman and a partial cover of the Mad Mad riddim, first heard in "Mad Mad Mad" by Alton Ellis," according to Wikipedia.

Enjoy listening to my choices of the top 10 songs by Sublime!
