Top 10 Sporting Songs

M. E. Guy
No matter the time of year, we absolutely love our sporting events in this country. The venues, the food, the crowds, and the players all make these special events so unforgettable. However, there is one component associated with sporting events that literally gets us out of our seats- the music. Music adds that distinctive touch and plants a seed in our mind which makes the event that much more memorable. Music makes a connection with sports that leaves an impression for years to come if not forever. I have rated my top 10 sports songs of all time in descending order. See how many of them take you back to a special game or unique sporting event.

Tour de France
by Kraftwerk- This electronic European tune pumps out sounds that accurately simulate a bike ride in the world famous Tour de France bike race. Each time I listen to the synthesized track, the opening sounds mimic a slow mountainous bike climb through the Pyrenees and by song's end you are crossing the finish line of the Champs-Elysees.

U Can't Touch This
by M.C. Hammer- This up tempo song really gets the crowd pumped at basketball games. Hammer tells it like it is over the Rick James sampled tune. I always feel like this song sends a clear distinct message to the opposing team.

Take Me out to the Ballgame
by various artists- This jingle has that special nostalgia attached to it. In fact, I feel cheated if I visit the baseball park and leave without hearing and singing it. This song gets everyone involved, especially when it is done in the 7th inning stretch. I have been singing it since I was a child. You have to love the part about peanuts and cracker jacks!

Another One Bites the Dust by Queen
- This song is an all time favorite cheerleader dance routine song. The baseline is rocking and Queen lets it rip on guitar. When the entire crowd gets into this song, you'll have one fired up bunch of fans.

Centerfield by John Fogerty
- This melody is a wonderful pre-game warm-up song before the first pitch is tossed out. Hearing this song blasted in a baseball stadium conjures up thoughts about that little league player who only wants a chance. It gets me in the mood for watching a good old fashion nine inning battle.

I Got You (I Feel Good)
by James Brown- When the Godfather of Soul is played in a sporting venue; I know it has been a really great game. This is the track I like booming through the speakers at the close of a game because I know my team has won. It makes me get up and dance.

Eye of the Tiger
by Survivor- This song is by far the absolute biggest motivational tune going at sporting events. How can you not think about Rocky running up those steps? This song is a true sports classic. Auburn University, with their Tiger mascot, can't get enough of this one.

Get Ready for This
by 2 Unlimited- Here's another European techno jam that simply gets in your head and stays there. Football, baseball, hockey, and basketball teams use this song to get everyone going. In fact, I think the song is probably over used, but it still an utterly awesome tune.

Whoomp! There It Is
by Tag Team- This big base hit absolutely thumps you out of your seat and has you joining the sports frenzy going on all around you. The chorus or lyrical hook really pulls you in and has you chanting right along with the beat. I'm still baffled at how the artists created this top record, but they definitely got busy on this top sports classic.

We Will Rock You by Queen
- This is the perfect song for sporting events. This song has the beat that makes you stomp your feet. And people actually do so whenever this song comes on the airwaves in a sporting venue. By the time the cutting lyrics transition to guitar riffs, the entire assembly of sports fanatics is deep in a trance and ready to do athletic battle. In my opinion, this song is the ultimate in sporting songs.

I just love M.C. Hammer. I like "Let's Get It Started Again," too. There's a bunch of new stuff (hip-hop and rap) that I like but haven't a clue who does it, because I'm old. LOL I just ask my teenage granddaughter.
