Top 10 Thanksgiving Traditions in the U.S.

Shannon Wilson
Thanksgiving is traditionally a family holiday. It's a time to acknowledge what you're thankful for. My family has their own set of holiday traditions as do millions of other families all over the United States. Some traditions are not just immediate family traditions, but ones that many Americans share. This article will detail the top Thanksgiving traditions in the U.S.

#1: Turkey Meal

When Thanksgiving rolls around, most homes that celebrate have a turkey cooking in the oven. The turkey meal is one of the most popular traditions in the U.S whether you have a real turkey or a vegan one. It is usually served with stuffing, cranberries and mashed potatoes.

#2: Giving Thanks

One of my favorite traditions that is also a top Thanksgiving tradition in the U.S. is giving thanks. People gather around the table, taking turns to say what they are thankful for. It is a good message to teach to children and adults alike, to find something positive to say on this special day.

#3: Wishbone

When I was a kid, my favorite tradition was the wishbone. I'd take it out from the turkey, let it dry and pull it with another family member. The person left with most of the wishbone, got a wish. Families all over the US do the same thing, trying to win the Thanksgiving wish.

#4: Parade

Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade in NYC is a huge event that is televised every Thanksgiving. There are floats, bands and the famous large towering balloons. Over 46 million Americans enjoy the parade yearly.

#5: Football

Football is a steadfast Thanksgiving tradition. The tradition began in 1876 and has stuck ever since. Football fans can enjoy a good meal then relax with a game on the TV.

#6: Family Reunions

Family is important on Thanksgiving. It is traditional for families to travel near and far to reunite with other family members in order to celebrate together on this day of Thanks.

#7: Pumpkin Pie

The traditional dessert on Thanksgiving is pumpkin pie. Either store bought or homemade, most American families serve pumpkin pie. You can serve it alone or with a dollop of cool whip.

#8: Family Movies

Families in the US deem Thanksgiving the perfect time to dig out family movies and watch them with other family members. It is a nice way to remember family that is no longer with you and to see how far your family has come.

#9: Napping

While it's not a tradition that everyone wants to admit, it's a standing joke in families everywhere to take a nap after the big meal. There is nothing wrong with partaking in a nap after your stomach is full and you're surrounded by the people you love.

#10: Preparation for Black Friday

Another tradition for those savvy shoppers gearing up for Christmas is to prepare for Black Friday on Thanksgiving Day. Companies send out their advertisements in the Thanksgiving newspaper so that individuals can mark their shopping routes.
