10 - City Market
Open-air city markets have been a part of Savannah's history since 1755. The modern day market still offers fresh produce and fish to visitors, but also includes an art gallery, boutiques, pubs and restaurants. Check the market's calender and plan a visit when cultural events and live music are scheduled.
9 - Bonaventure Cemetery
Take a self-guided tour or join in one of the regular group walks of the historic cemetery. Ornate funeral statues and evening ghost tours attract thousands of visitors to the picturesque cemetery annually.
8 - Mercer Williams House and Museum
The southern style mansion was built in 1871 and home to one of Savannah's most colorful and intriguing residents. Jim Williams, the man both the book and movie, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" was based upon lived in the home until it was turned into a public museum. Wander through the massive home and browse the eclectic collection of antique furniture, Chinese porcelain and portraits created by famous artists.
7 - Guided Walking Tours
The Savannah Walks Tour Company offers a host of guided tours in the downtown area. Select a tour which tickles your fancies or answers the burning questions of history buffs. Tour topics include Civil War excursions, ghost tours, historical homes, historical churches, cemeteries and a "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" movie location and Jim Williams informational tour.
6 - Colonial Park Cemetery
Visit the final resting places of Savannah's earliest and most influential inhabitants. Buttin Gwinnett was laid to rest at Colonial Park Cemetery just a few years after signing the Declaration of Independence. If you are seeking spooky thrills and chills, buy a ghost tour ticket and tour the grounds by the light of the moon.
5 - Telfair Museums
Tour the south's oldest art museum to view sculptures, paintings and exhibits dating back to early European and American time periods. The entire museum complex is listed on the National Historic Register and include the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences, Owens-Thomas House, Jepson Center for the Arts and Art Zeum, an interactive children's museum and gallery.
4 - River Street
Schedule at least one walk down River Street to soak up all the local flavor of the city. Dine at an outdoor cafe and watch the boats roll along the Savannah River. Street performers and festivals entertain River Street visitors throughout the year. Boutiques offering the creations of local artisans, restaurants and bars are a flurry of activity no matter what time of year you visit Savannah.
3- Savannah Carriage Tours
Climb into a comfortable antique carriage and embark on a waltz through history. The tours last approximately an hour and include narration of Savannah's heritage. In addition to the daytime historical tours, the carriage company offers late evening ghost tours and romantic twilight rides for couples.
2 - Tybee Island
Located just outside of Savannah's city limits, the coastal island is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Spend a day exploring the Intracoastal Waterway via kayak or hike the rugged trails to nature viewing areas. The visitors center includes historical exhibits, a mini-art gallery and statues. A swimming beach and boat launch offer a wide array of activities for both children and adults. Naturalist programs and guided tours allow you to fully experience all the island has to offer.
1 - Forsyth Park
The cast iron fountain in the center of the park has been a defacto star of many major motion pictures. Forsyth Park was shown in many scenes of the John Cusack movie, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" - based upon a high-profile murder committed by a prominent Savannah resident. Make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes before visiting the 30 acre park. The park is at the heart of Savannah's cultural hub with special events occurring throughout the year.
