Who wouldn't like to have a "Million Dollar" smile? But everybody is not so fortunate enough. We all have an innate desire to have a beautiful set of sparkling white teeth, which is evident from the numerous teeth whitening products available these days. We should take care of our teeth as much as our heart. Teeth form an important part of our personality. Healthy teeth last a lifetime.

Tooth decay is a commonly occurring problem for all people. It can be found right from the tooth's chewing surface to in-between teeth. Bacteria in the dental plaque thrive on sweet, sticky foods like chocolates, biscuits, pastries. The food particles from such items stick in the teeth and remain there, which lead to cavities.

Saliva consists of certain minerals that can restore the tooth enamel by working against the acid produced by the bacteria in our mouth. Those foods that need to be chewed and are not sugary are useful for firing up the creation of saliva. These and other tips listed below will help you maintain healthy teeth and a beautiful, confident smile.

Let us now look at the Top 10 tips for healthy teeth:

1. It is advisable to clean your teeth with a wet toothbrush and dental floss after munching on anything. It is good to use an appropriate toothbrush and floss in the right manner.

2. Get your teeth examined by a dentist at least twice a year. The dentist will rid your teeth of plaque, which will prohibit any gum disease or cavities from developing.

3. If you are suffering from swelling in the gums, bleeding while brushing or loose teeth, then it is time to visit the dentist immediately. All these are symptoms of periodontal disease. Don't neglect these signs at all.

4. Always inquire about various cosmetic alternatives with your dental surgeon to enhance the look of your chipped or stained teeth.

5. Tobacco products can cause mouth and throat cancer. So refrain from using such tobacco products, and that includes smoking too.

6. Some nuts are really hard to crack. Go easy on such eatables or objects and don't strain your teeth, as they may break. Don't chew your nails, eat something healthy instead. Also, very soft foods are not good either, as your teeth are not put to work in the way that is needed.

7. While playing sports, it is helpful to wear a mouth guard. This protects your jaws and mouth and avoids serious injuries to your teeth.

8. Consume a well balanced diet consisting of all the food groups. We must see to it that our daily diet contains whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fish, chicken, meat, milk products and restricted amount of junk food. Food like pizza and burgers contain cheese and other ingredients that are difficult to digest. Try and avoid such food items.

9. Always mix sweetened cereals with milk. Never eat them dry as they are harmful for the teeth.

10. Limit your daily intake of tea and coffee with sugar. It will be helpful in reducing tooth decay.
