1. Make sure the site is legit.
If you are using eBay.com as a place to find online auctions then you can be sure the site is legit. However if you're using another online auctions site, you should always make sure that they have support and contact information; you should also use your judgment to determine whether you should use it or not.
2. Find info. on the seller.
Every seller usually has a feedback page, make sure to check it out and read through some of the comments they have received. You should also make sure there's a way to contact them in case you need to.
3. Find competition.
Don't place a bid on the first item you find, always look for competition. Look for better prices, look on more sites, and look for sellers with better reputations.
4. Read the guarantee and returns policy.
This is very important! Always make sure to read the guarantee that the seller makes and check out the returns policy. If the seller doesn't have one, contact him/her before placing a bid on the product.
5. Notice shipping dates and costs, plus insurance availability.
Shipping dates are really important. If you're shopping around the holidays, make sure to check when the seller will be sending, and how you will be able to track your delivery. You should also check costs and question them if they don't seem right. Insurance is something that would be nice to take if it's offered.
6. Find payment information.
Payment information is usually at the bottom. You should always check to see how the person will be collecting payment, and what methods they're accepting. It's always best not use personal checks, cash, and always chose to use PayPal if possible to be secure.
7. Make sure to see pictures.
If you're going to place a bid, you should always look for pictures. Do not place a bid on something that sounds too good to be true if there's no pictures. You should also check with the seller to see if the photos available are recent.
8. Save contact information.
In case there is a problem with the product you won at anytime during, before, or after the sale it's always best to have the email address and a phone number to contact the seller. You should keep this information until your warranty expires.
9. Find out how long the online auction will go on for.
This is important to know, especially if you're sure you're going to place a bid. Usually bidding towards the end is best if you want to have the best chances to win; find out how long it'll be till the auction ends by searching the page.
10. Bookmark the page.
If you're going to place a bid on on a product online, make sure to always bookmark the page. This will help you to track the auction at anytime with ease; it will also allow you to go back to it once it's done if there's any problems at all.
